TURBO

What about your engine water temp sender? If it is a complete short (wire melted to exhaust or something) then the ecu would think it's like -50 F outside and it would fatten up the injectors and run really rich. I don't know much about the 3VZ as they might be two temp senders, 1 for the gauge and another just for the ecu. Check if there are two and then check the wiring for them.

Also, trace your O2 sensor wiring and make sure its not shorted out. Put your Ohm gauge on your O2 plug and make sure only the proper circuits have a ground.

Just a suggestion but have you checked your timing?   I used to adjust mine to get it to pass emissions and it made the exhaust manifold and cat glow from the heat like that.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

        it did nothing....

i went and got a used 89 computer, installed it......

        IT DID NOTHING.................................

It sounds pretty good. Was the entire cat glowing red or only it's inner core(s) ?

Maybe the honey cone inner core(s) always glow red, but it does have enough conductive energy to increase the temperature of the outer metal shell?

I still think it is running waay too rich though.. Can you take a video of it 1) revving and 2) constant high rpm, like a constant 4000 rpm please?

Just pull out cylinders 1-4, and 6 since they are the easiest, and compare them.

Here is normal:

And this is what they would look like if your engine was running very rich as I suspect:

the center of the top of the outer shell of the cat was glowing after only about 30 seconds of run time.... of corse it's dark out but... that seems x-treamly excesive to me

Definitely get it running right before you slap a new cat on there! :yikes:

The only way your current cat could be affecting your engine right now is if it was somehow plugged up creating a huge amount of back pressure. But if this was the case, you would have much more serious problems like burnt valves on your hands.

I don't think it will give us any useful data, but you could run a compression check just for poos and giggles.

We need to find out if only 1 plug looks like this, or all of them. You either have a badly leaking injector, a dead cylinder (no compression), or you have an overall ignition problem. I'm guessing it's an overall problem and they all look like this...

ok... here's #2 cylinder

It doesn't look that bad. I was expecting worse. Perhaps you indeed do have 1 cylinder alone that is giving you trouble....?

if i had a compresion test kit... what would burnt valves act like?

Well, it would crank funny and have a rough idle because the power delivery would no longer be balanced. It would run like crap.

The reason I mention the compression, is because besides air, three things are required for any otto cycle engine to run: 1) Fuel, 2) Ignition, 3) Compression.

Remember that simply sparking fuel isn't enough for the combustion we need. The air fuel mixture must be under what? .... under compression!

Burnt valve = compression leak = less compression = very poor combustion.
