Gotta replace a 3.0 V6
« on: Nov 28, 2008, 09:41:08 AM »
So I got a 93 Runner with a blown 3.0, got a lead on a running low mileage 3.0 for 450 bucks.  Not bad in my opinion, local junkyard wanted 1800 for a 3.0 that had bearing material in the oil.  So it's a direct swap, gotta pull the old one and drop in the new one.  This is my first 3.0, looks like it's a PITA to work on.  Are these things ridiculously frustrating to work on?  To give ya an idea of my patience...Once I had to do a timing belt on a ford escort and had to drop one side of the motor to get to it and it frustrated me soo much that I took a shovel to the body and glass.  My buddy wants 150 to pull the old one and drop in the new one.  He needs the money so I figure I'd be stimulating the economy at the same time.  Or keep the 150 and do it myself?

They are kind of a pain to work on but, I havent done that much to mine and it has about 234k on it. I paid someone to do the head gasket on it about 3 years ago. If you trust the guy thats going to drop it in I think thats a good deal.  My problem is I dont trust anyone to do it right.

if its reliable work id pay the 150 to get it done.

i recently did a 3.0 swap on my truck and at this point i havent gotten it running all the way correctly and i cant figure out why, but overall is was fairly simple to do. the worst part was probably the bellhousing. otherwise all the electrical plugs (besides the injectors) are unique and fairly obvious where they go. but the intake has to be pulled when removing the engine because you cant get to teh injector plugs otherwise. so...for 150, if hes any good, have him do it. :dunno:

i paid 1200 for a recently rebuilt engine and did the swap myself so, 600 into it total sounds alright to me.

If you trust him, pay the man!  :gap:  Its not really that hard to do, but if I had the opportunity to have someone else do it for 150, I'd jump on it :yesnod:

$450 for a running 3.0 is a good deal

In your opinion please tell us what is wrong with the 3.0 and how long you have had one. I have been running one for over thirteen years and have yet to have a problem with it. Yes they are not the fastest thing, but neither is a 22r. Yes there were HG problems with them, I had mine done right after I got it thirteen years ago and have not had a problem since. They are a bit harder to work on, but you learn to adapt.

What kind of problems did you have with the one you owned. If you tell me you have not had one then it is hearsay which to me means it is the byproduct of hay which comes out the back ends of male cows which are Bulls.

Ive have a 3.0 in my dd and it has been one of the most reliable tucks I've ever owned. However its not a fast truck by any means! but it suits me fine.

i couldnt agree more with oops. hes the only other person i see on pirate saying this. i think its a lot to do with "oh those motors suck cause i heard they do" there notorious but i dont think they screw up as much as people say they do. are these motors slow, yes, a bit harder to work on, ya. i have had mine less than oops but im going on over 5 years and its fine. i just deal with it being really slow but im not ever having to wrench on it. the only other thing i have to say is if you can find a 3.4 for really cheap go that route but 450 for another motor that drops in is perfect.

he is now convinced that it needs a chevy motor/tranny/t-case and axles, and the 38's off the crawler so he can get some 42's for the crawler

I can't decide on the thing.  I wanna work on it but I also wanna take a break from wrenching now that the crawler is done.  I think I'll lay off the projects for a while and push the thing in the side yard once the old 3.0 is out

You know I said the same thing back in 1968 after a two-year build on a street rod and a chopper. Here it is 2008, I still have bloody knuckles, and hands that refuse to come clean unless I hand wash a weeks worth of dishes!!! :smack:

the 3.0 is notoriuos for blowing head gaskets its because the drivers side rear water jacket and passenger side front water jacket are to close to the cylinder wall which causes them to blow so often my buddy has a 22r that would smoke any 3.0

Dude I had one 89 V-6 and a 93 V-6 and they both had value problems. I would say stay as far away from them as you can. I had a buddy with a 22re that he built for the same price as...fixing a v-6 or swapping a v-6...and it blew my V-6 with intake heades and exhust before I had any problems with them. You would be better off with the 22re for the price or the 4.3 out of a s-10 or something!!! Eather way STAY AWAY from a V-6!!!!

I got the old motor out now.  Next to come is the tranny and t-case.  I got this idea of finding a complete 3/4 ton chevy pickup like a late 70's and swapping all the drivetrain on the Runner.  I got a nice 4 bolt main 350 sitting in my garage and if I run that I wanna take out all the toy drivetrain.  Run a 44 and 14 bolt, leaf sprung all the way around for simplicity, do a small body lift for clearance, install a 350/th350/205 or 208, cut down the chevy driveshafts to length.  Run like 4.5 inches of backspacing with bigger fender flares and it just might be legal.  I'm not a big fan of the 3.0 after having to pull one.  And all this IFS garbage needs to go.  I'll vut and hack away the inner fender flares so I got room to work.  Mount all the bs on the firewall.
