If you could only keep one rifle
« on: Nov 26, 2008, 10:18:33 PM »
Which would it be and why?  This includes center fire rifles only, no shotguns or rimfires.  I'm not asking what rifle you'd most like to have, I'm just curious which of your current rifles you'd most like to keep and why

For me it'd be my remington 788 in .308.  Why?  It's an incredibly versatile round that can take anything from small game up to.... well, anything I'd need to shoot in this area, and as anybody who's shot a 788 knows, these rifles typically have sub moa accuracy and have been known to have sub .5 moa groups stock!  I've seen down to 110 or less grain bullets, and up to about 220 grain bullets.

Edit:  I'd like to keep this thread simple and clean, therefor I'll be editing out any ramblings or back and forth in the interest of staying on topic

that's the one I'd want too, not only for the reasons you stated but it is probably the most versital rifle out there. You can beat the snot out of it and it just keeps going. Plus that thirty round magazine doesn't hurt either.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't that make it an ar10  :gap:

Excellent choice btw, and if I had one it'd probably replace my 788 as my first choice for the same reasons you and rs mentioned.  I'm actually trying to motivate to sell off a couple of my wrecked street bikes so I can buy an ar10, or even an ar10 and ar15 while I still can!

Ah, I keep my 6mm rem model 600 just for the fact that its a generation hand down. That would suck to only have one gun!

the XCR from Robinson Arms in the 7.62mm, picking it up in march. pretty much the action of an ak47 with the versatility of an m4.

Won the west....I thought that was the Sharps 45-70 Government. It's what 90% or more  of the folks took west with them in the late 1800's.  :yesnod:  The 30-30( it means 30 Caliber 30 Grains black power) was not available till the turn of century. The 45-70 is a 45 Caliber round on top of 70 Grains of black power, and is a harder hitting round then the 30-30, with better range.

So with that said I would have to say one of the transition guns, a 303 British Lee Enfield Number4 MRk 1 *( Black power, Cordite{the stuff they use in cannons}, Smokeless power), 8mm Mauser(same loading options), or a Sharps 45-70( only black powder or smokeless replacement)   They are easy to use, reload, and can all be used at longer ranges 1000 to 1800 meters.

Does a chain gun count as a rifle?

If so, thats what Im bringing

IF not,  then I would bring my handed down 1890 Winchester octagon barrel....I just love shooting it

Mine would be my Norinco AK-47.  Chances are if we all got trimmed down to one firearm it wouldn't be game we'd be shooting.

I'd still take a shotgun first.

But if it HAS to be a center fire, a .45 or .38/.357 carbine.  Preferably a pump action.  The idea here is cheap and always will find ammo for it. 9mm might also work.  95%+ of the time you'd need a gun in an emergency, it's at ranges of less than 100-200ft, so a carbine like this is perfect.

Taurus makes a nice range of pump action carbines.

Lever actions are also nice, but they are significantly more complex and slower to cycle in general than a pump.  Semi-autos are nice but not as a last resort option, IMO.

Note - if we're talking end of the world scenario, though, I'd go low tech and get a simple black powder rifle if only because you can make your own black powder in a pinch and melt almost anything down for a slug.(note - unless I get to keep some reloading equipment that is... heh)

Good choice jason   I'm very tempted to buy one, if for no other reason than you can still buy bulk ammo for like $60-70 for 440 rounds  :yikes:

I've got a buddy who bought one, and now thats what he uses pig hunting.  :dunno:  he loves it.  The price of ammo is why I bought one  :gap:  gotta be ready for the zombies.  :hahaha:

Nice thing too, is they're real cheap, I bought mine for $75

no it would not. AR10 is the brand name for the armalite .308.

i hate to be the barer of bad news but the .308 (Sr-25, AR-10, Remington r-25 which is a dpms .308) are all AR-10 and 20 round mags are the max and have not one part incommon with the AR-15. our sniper platoon uses the mk11 sr-25 and its a great weapon and i have the dpms. great weapon but its gas gun and has dependability drawbacks

i would keep a socom2 or any m-14 variants
