Rear transfer case removal
« on: Nov 13, 2008, 03:28:31 PM »
I have duals in my 4runner but the back case has a bad leak.  I wanted to know if I can remove the rear case by itself or do I need to remove both cases and disassemble them off the truck?  I searched here and pirate but I could not find any answer.  I have the drive shafts, cross member, and speedometer cable off the back case.  I have also drained the rear case and removed the shift lever.  I know one of the leaks is coming from the top of the case where the shift lever is attached but other leak I think is actually on the rear body of the case.

Well, I can get the rear case and adapter to come almost all the way off the studs and then it stops.  All the nuts and bolts are out. I do not know whats stopping it from sliding all the way out.  It does look like the adapter is not a Marlin product despite what the previous owner told me.   I am going to break for dinner and then pull both cases out as one unit.

leave the adapter on the crawl box, just pull the rear case by itself.  If you've already gone that far, you'll have to pull them both out and reseal it all anyway.

I pulled both units and now I am curious if anyone can identify this setup?  No markings on the adapter.  It is weird.

I still can not get the cases separated as it looks like the shift rail runs all the way from the front box to the rear box through the adapter.  I do not want to tear the rear case all the way apart as I think most of my leak is from the top and a hole in the case that the PO tried to silicone closed :shake:.

I wish, it looks like it is a JP eater adapter which apparently was crafted around the turn of the century and has no product support.

There is not a thing wrong with the JP Eater set-up. It is a good solid product and with a bit of modicication it can have two sticks or a single stick on front case and twin-stick on the rear.. Marlins adapter and the JP came out about the same time. The guy whom owns it now is something else and he will tell you that he designed it. That is BS a guy named Chris Collard and another guy that I can not remember his name right now designed it.

If it is a JP eater is it as good as Marlins, heck no but it does work.

There is a bolt or stud everywhere you marked.  Look a little closer and you can see.  Its funky, but since it came with the truck and I have wheeled successfully with it, I will just clean it up and run it until it breaks.
