Yes, block or jack up the transmission, remove the tcase crossmember, unbolt tcase from tranny, and CAREFULLY pull straight back.

Easiest with 2 people.

Remember to drain the t/case gear oil, remove the shifter, speedocable, and 4WD shift light indicator

Yes, ... CAREFULLY pull straight back.

Easiest with 2 people.

Best I could probably do is one guy (me) with a transmission jack. Would be cool to fabricate a cradle to hold the t-case level on the jack. -- Matt

Nah, dont worry about it. I can pull em out by myself. Benching 80 lbs is cake for anyone this side of 13 years old.

If you do not keep it level, then it will just have more friction to come out. Hopefully you are planning on replacing the rear transmission output seal, so I wouldnt be worried about damaging the output seal, and the rest is just splines inside of a coupler. You could even let it hang in there on the input alone and it wont hurt anything.

t-case is pretty easy to maneuver because it's short.  a little heavy but manageable -- just remember to have a couple bolts on-hand for when you reinstall to hold things together.

Just FYI, I am used to just sliding the tcase out on a Yota but I was scavaging a t-case out of an old Jeep with a d20 and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't come out until I pulled and pryed it out....... with all the transmission gears with it.

Hey wrenchtech
I'm in the same boat (84 5spd) and was just going to ask this same question this morning, to make sure I didn't have any holes in my theory.  Glad to read that it is fairly easy, I am going to be doing this this weekend (merry christmass) and didn't want any surprises. :crossed:  Already got both seals from Toyota so i think im ready to go!!

This was an easy swap, it took less time than i figured.   One tip I would add is use a drain pan when you pull the t-case away from the transmission (Yes I did drain the fluid first), there was a little oil in the pockets between the t-case and tranny.

A toy case is a cake walk compared to a np205,now that's heavy.
