Oh yeah, I know you know your ways around these motors . . . BUT how sure are you that the gear timing is right? If you are off one tooth, it will run like :pokinit: , die a lot, and the distributor will be right at the end of its adjustment when the timing is right. Don't even ask how I know all this, it was a painful learning experience.
cam timing is perfect,   I do  hear that AFM door slap closed a lot, OddMar is going to bring me a spare to check.

yeah it should bypass that relay and supply voltage directly to the fuel pump when the key is in the ON or START position. COR is located above the ECM on the passengers kickpanel. Have you tried jumping TE1 and E1 to check for any flash codes?

rust in the fuel tank.

it was fine enough to get through the fuel filter and clog the injectors.  we pulled the entire fuel system out and cleaned it all and the fuel rail had probably a tablespoon full of rust in it alone.

thank you everyone for all the help.

next project will be putting some rings in it.  its going through a quart of oil in 20 miles :yikes:

OH, we had to replace the auto trans.  when running the carb on it the electronics in the trans werent working and the hyd pressure being down burned up the clutches in it.   the one from the white 86 runner bolted up after swapping the harness to the 88 harness and shifts perfectly.

Glad to hear it's working...

V-man, i helped switch your 86 tranny, but had to get home and didn't know if they got it running or not.

You should have seen all the rust in the fuel tank. The sides were really bad, not just a few spots. Glen put Colton to work tipping the tank back and forth with a chain in it to scrape the rust free, then i devised an easier way to tip the tank around (rope trick), and eventually scraped my hand and forearm raw forcing my hand in through the EFI sending unit hole to scrub as much of the inside walls as i could reach with steel wool.

We blew air through the sending unit line and the fuel line on the 4Runner, and i argued with the O'Rileys guy to get new injector seals. A year ago i had no problem getting the right ones, but now their computer spits out the wrong part number. (Finally called my mom in Ill-Annoys and had her read me the part number off the box i forgot to bring with me in order to get the right ones. Good thing i kept an old box, from O'Rileys they are $3.39, from anywhere else they are $15 a box!!) We switched out the AFM for one i had brought down but it didn't seem to change things, then we found a wire had seperated from the plug going to #1 injector. Found some micro-sized speaker spade lugs that would slide on the injector contacts to replace the plug (not enough wire sticking out to solder to), then filled the injector connection cavity with RTV to hold the lugs on better and keep water out.

After putting the original AFM back on, we swapped the throttle body out for the one i'd brought down with me, and got it running fair. Set the timing with the Special Service Tool (paper clip) and Colton drove it home.  :driving:

Just as we were leaving for the Jamboree he called Glen and said the tranny was slipping baad. We stopped at his work and Glen took it for a test drive and confirmed the tranny was the culprit. In order for his SIL and daughter to have 1 vehicle to drive, we had to switch the trannies out when we got back from the Jamboree.

Sorry Mike, didn't think you might want that tranny for a spare. I throw them away and put in 5-speeds, so i never considered it. Wasn't my decision though. If you like, i'll find Colton an automatic or rebuild his, and we'll get that one back to you.

I was sure Mike had said he didnt need it once before when talking about Coltons runner, otherwise I would have called him before we did the swap :cheese:

Thanks Mike.   you were right about the rust
