no, I am out of it

This is a good idea, but I tend to travel alone a lot, so i need to carry everything and be REALLY heavy!
Yes self sufficient is the way to be...I've learned not to rely on others (even in your group) to remember to bring stuff

unless I missed it, why has nobody said WELDING ROD yet. I keep 1 lb of 6011 wrapped in plastic when I wheel.

Hawk Thor

When I get my underhood welder someday then I will carry welding rods, until then they stay at home.

I might just cheap out for now and make a welding set for welding with car batteries and jumper cables, el cheapo stylez.

Duffil

3 batteries and jumper cables works great.

Homefries

I have never looked into this but is this the way you would set it up??

I've used them in series, to get 36v. the pic above is in parallel...only 12v.  this is :offtopic:

You connect the negative of one battery to the piece you want to weld, connect the positive of that battery to the negative of the second battery and the positive of that one to the negative of the third battery. Then you connect the welding handle to the positive of the third battery and start fixing your broken part.

Homefries

So then like this.

toolbox w/ basic tools and zipties.
thats about it

Thanks Duff.   Now, back to the originally scheduled program!!   :_order:

I just bought 15´ of 3" flexible, foldable aluminum duct that I keep in a 3´ long PVC pipe to keep it from crushing.

I also have a flange to fit the 3" duct to my 2.5" exhaust. I will use the duct to heat up fuel filters in diesel trucks and to thaw alternators and starters after they have been sitting in blizzards so they can spin freely. I can also use it to melt ice off brakes and steering components after the truck has been parked all night long on wheeling trips.

It can also be used to keep guys a little warmer when working on a rig in the cold. Ya know, point it at their hands so they can actually feel their hands and be able to bend their fingers.

P.s. You could also heat oilpans and airintakes to make it easier for your buddies to start their diesels in the cold, I know I will make my gas powered friends heat my rig up when its -4 or -6 °F.

My list is more basic:
- Basic set of tools.
- Basic first aid kit, plus flares and other normal crap.
- straps.
- spare winch cable if you have one.(synthetic weighs a lot less - hint...)
- slime for the tire in case the spare fails too.
- any bits you feel you need like spare fuses and bulbs and so on.
- more straps and duct tape.
- small empty gas can if general, filled if going off-road.  Even one gallon can be a life saver.
- most of the rest of homefries' list - the basic stuff at least like a multitool, bailing wire, a couple of hose clamps or zip ties... spare relay or two as well to the ignition and fuel injection parts...
- LED flashlight.  Look for one that has a good 50+ hour running time on low power.
- Stove that can run on unleaded fuel if need be.(often overlooked)
- Capilene thermal underwear. Lifesaver and wicks away moisture as well.
- Water purification tablets(part of he basic "kit" with the emergency supplies)  I prefer compass, maps, and the like to GPS and so on - I like to have zero-tech options as well as a backup if I can.  NOTE - I have a GPS, but you can't rely on it alone...

Oh, a compressor on your engine is a godsend... Add that asap.(need to do it myself - heh)  An air tank can work in a pinch I guess.  Some jobs need a cutting disc or an impact wrench...

- If off road in really off-the-road territory, a few shells and so on to fit in your firearm(I recommend a foldable .410/.223 combo gun myself)  Bears are really aggressive things...  Not hoping you NEED it, ever... but just sayin'...   A .45 cal carbine also works well in a pinch.(I'm a fan of lever actions myself - heh)    P.S. a .410 slug is about as effective as a mid-range .35 cal hunting rifle at close range - don't underestimate it's usefulness against bigger creatures)

I'm gonna start wheelin' with KDX so I don't have to bring anything but a cooler full...

I carry most of what has been listed here.  Usually when someone on the trail needs anything-they come to me first.
I do not carry a spare alternator or starter.  I can get it started if I need to, I do carry a spare battery so that would cover the alternator.  Did not notice it but I carry a can of starting fluid also.  Reseating beads or whatever.  Wintertime I carry a tent/cot in the roofrack along with a 4 season sleeping bag-makes that unexpected overnighter alot more bearable.  I don't wheel without another vehicle along either.  I also carry a homemade tarp and frame that goes from my roofrack over the rear of the bed and back another 10'.  For shade or rain.  I carry a small duffle with a one burner stove, and freeze dried foods in the winter.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I've got a truck box, and I used to have a box made by rubbermaid, the black one with the grey lid and red handles, walmart has them in the automotive section.
