Do you really give a rats' ass if someone is offended by it?

I spoke to my wife, who is Japanese, and she actually has never heard of the term. She is not from America so she does not know the American slang terms. So I had to explain to her how Americans referred to Japanese people during and after WWII as Japs or Japos and she understands how that can be offensive, but she believes that was a long time ago and people shouldn't be offended by it anymore. :twocents:

So then I explained the Jeep "you wouldn't understand" slogan and explained how someone wants to use Jaap instead of Jap in contrast to Jeep, and she thought it was funny and definitely would not be offended if she saw that.

Edited by FFC: Please refrain from using the N word in its entirety.

I think that is totally different than Jap, the N word was completely used for demeaning an entire race of people. Jap was not used in that way in the beginning it just evolved into one. It was just a shortened form of a nation not the people in general to demean them.

I'm the one who cut the sticker for DTB, i just haven't mailed it yet.

BigMike, i pm'd ya awhile back, cause i didn't wanna offend Misato or pith you off...thanks fer ask'in her.

I deleted the a's and replaced all of them with upside-down e's, but since people fixate on the first and last letter of a word to read it, it still reads 'Jeep thing' at a single glance. You have to actually stop and READ the sticker to realize it says 'Jaap'.

If anyone wants one they're $5, curved to fit the top of your windshield, white vinyl letters with application tape so you can peel n stick.

Or do you think it would look better with just aa's in Jaap? Since Mikey's wifey don't mind.

I don't think anyone ever used the word Jap as they were hanging a man for back talking a white guy.

What about Canuck, Brit, Paki, etc.

Completely wrong...  The N word is about a persons worth.  I know more white people that fit the definition that any other race....

The whole PC thing was just in evidence in this thread...I hate the phrase "the N word", it smacks of Newspeak.  If I in anger call someone (using this exact phrase) "You low life N-word!" does it not carry the same weight...since N-word has replaced the word in question? Holy crap, I feel like Parcells trying to talk about TO without using his name.

The fact that a mod censored the word in question only proves the point...PC is censorship in the first degree. What else is it, if you can't even mention a word in discussion, not using it in a negative manor? I know this is not my bbs and I use it at the owners pleasure...but, I find this situation disgusting. No one was called the word in question, the word was used in relation to a discussion about supposed ethnic/racial epithets. How soon will it be before we can no longer use the word Holocaust for fear of offending anyone?

Abnormaltoy I'm with ya on that.. I feel dirty censoring myself.  I don't use that word in day to day language as I reserve it for "special" occasions only and I have yet to meet a black person that I felt deserved to be called that....

WT, abnormaltoy, to an extent - I agree with you.  I am not in favor of abbreviating an offensive word, because we all know what it means and it's just about the same as saying it.  It's kinda like bypassing the censors as far as I'm concerned.

However, we don't need to be throwing that word around no matter what the thread topic is.  At the request of some board members, the word was removed.  I figured it was a valid question, concerning the topic of the thread.

Well, I'm sorry you did it. I disagree from the heart of my bottom. Who could be offended by a mere word used in discussion? Are these the same people who ban books? Who is so weak minded as to let a few letters ruin their world? I'm sorry, I can't stand this kind of mentality.

What I don't understand is how ANY word can be construed as derogatory unless it has an ACTUAL derogatory adjective preceding it?  For example, and this is a true story....Tommy Wong who lives down the block is a Jap.  What's wrong with that?  It's a fact.  Now, if I were to say, Tommy Wong is a worthless (or insert any adjective meant to be demeaning) Jap, then I can see where one would take offense.  But I would think you should take offense to the actual derogatory adjectives than the stupid "racial" slang.

I don't know...I guess I just don't "get it."  I am a woman so therefore I have to hear all the time how I can't drive, I pregnant dog all the time, and so on and so forth.  I couldn't care less about these generalizations because I know they aren't true about me (for the most part).

See what I mean?  If someone's demeanor or purpose is to be a first-rate A-hole and put you down, then by all means get offended.  But if they obviously are NOT meaning any harm then who cares what words they use?

First of all...don't try to confuse me with all your talk of adjectives, dangling participles, etc.

Secondly...Mr. Wong would be completely within his rights to be angry at you characterizing him as a Jap. Wong is a Chinese surname.  :gap:

I am just frosted to hell at this. That someone is so insecure in their beliefs that they had to stay after school to tell the teacher that Johny and me were smoking at recess. Freaking grow a pair and state your case...argue about it. Closed minds shutting off debate at the mere hint of an alarm word  :yikes: is part of the reason we are where we are. Simpletons.  :shake:
