Secondly...Mr. Wong would be completely within his rights to be angry at you characterizing him as a Jap. Wong is a Chinese surname.  :gap:

  Ya know, I almost said "chink" but I wanted to stick closer to the thread title....yeah, that's it!  haha.

I am just frosted to hell at this. That someone is so insecure in their beliefs that they had to stay after school to tell the teacher that Johny and me were smoking at recess. Freaking grow a pair and state your case...argue about it. Closed minds shutting off debate at the mere hint of an alarm word  :yikes: is part of the reason we are where we are. Simpletons.  :shake:

Had to read it twice, but I gotcha now.

Sir, you must be from the wrong side of the tracks. I'm a cracker too...but, as endorsed by Andy Griffith...I'm a Ritz! Gooood Crackah!

I'd like to invite the offended one to post up on why they felt put upon.

What disappoints me more than anything is the fact that some board members felt that the word needed to be removed, so they reported it to the mods, instead of posting in the thread   Thats the state of society now a days, and it pisses me off.  Instead of confronting the problem head on, people pussyfoot around, and pregnant dog and moan about it to other people.  What happened to the good old days, when someone offended you, you either took it, or you did something about it, pulled out your six-shooter and shot the b*std :gap:  Not that I think we need to back THAT far (well, it might help get rid of some of the idiots)  but back to when there were consequences for being a sniveling little whiner, instead of being rewarded for it.

Especially in this format, where the words in question are being used in a discussion, and not in a deragatory manner.  How are you supposed to talk about it if you can't say it ???  You've lost me there.

Personally, I think being offended is a cop-out, and an excuse to be a whiner. You can not like something, and choose to do something about it, but to me, being offended means that you'd rather hear/see/smell/etc.  something, and whine about how much it bothers you without actually doing something about it.  You could call me any name in the book, and I'd laugh in your face.  If you feel the need to call me something like that, then I have no need to associate with you, and your opinion means nothing to me.  If something does bother me, I'm going to handle it accordingly.  Not because I was offended, but because what was done was inappropriate, and wrong.

An old phrase for backing down (being a coward) is "taking sand."  Well, IMO, there are parts of this country that are nothing than giant litter boxes, and you notice, those are the cesspools of today's society? Coincidence?  I'm thinking no.

FFC,  Don't take this as an attack on you.  I know how you feel, and I know you were just doing your job   This isn't directed toward you at all.

On a complete and total side note, was it really board members that reported it, or guests?  Reason I ask, is because if you go to the "who's online" section it seems like there are a lot of guests reporting things to moderators.  Go ahead, take a look!  I find it interesting that they can do that :dunno:  Reason I ask is because I can't think of any board members that would be offended by the use of the word in a discussion sense.

It's easier to report something than to do something about it yourself.. In that mindset you are still "doing something about it" but you are not getting involved personally.  I call that being a pregnant dog.  If your not willing to get off your butt and DO SOMETHING TO FIX THE ISSUE that shut your yap about it all your doing is producing more CO2 and destroying our ozone layer......  :P

Absolutely!  Do you know how many calls we go one every day that are total BS calls, because someone drives by on a cell phone, and calls something in?  They go on their merry way, feeling like they've done their good deed for the day, and we put people's lives at risk going code 3, only to find out its total BS, but we can't do anything different, because it could be an emergency.  What happened to stopping real quick, and checking things out?

Few examples:

Reported car fire-care was overheated, and releasing steam  :shake:
Man down-Dude was sleeping in the shade, leaning against the trunk of a tree :shake:
car accident- car spun out in the snow, didn't hit anything, and drove off, not even knowing 911 was called for them :shake:
strange smell coming from a building- How in the hell do you smell something from a building when you're blowing past it on the freeway at 70mph!!  Take a bath, it was probably you!!  :shake:

Oh I understand that one....  My brother is a fire fighter, when we're hanging out and his pager goes off he always wonders what burn barrel they are getting called to go put out that's been reported as a 20 acre fire...   :shake_head:

I have called in a number of fires and drunk drivers..  If its a fire I'll stop and check out the situation for a second if its not obvious as to what the problem is.  If it warrants a call I'll make it plain and simple.  For a drunk I don't call it in and leave it at that.  I follow the bastid until a po po is there pulling me/mrs. sloshypants over.

I just wonder how many people in this world just KNOW that "the N-word is BAD" but they have no idea really why??  Only because that's what they were taught?  If we just stop teaching kids that at one time "blacks" and "whites" weren't equal and therefore we have to girl thingy-foot around for the rest of eternity so as not to offend anyone now, would it just stop being an issue?

That's what I'm thinking.....probably not even someone who actually got offended by it for any real reason, just someone who saw *GASP* THE N-WORD and was like OMIGAWD!!

Last I checked my family never owned any slaves.  There are no former slaves owned by southerners left in the US why is it still such an issue?  If the rolls were reversed and it was my color that was once enslaved it wouldn't change my outlook at all...  I never owned your family so why should I feel guilty about it?   Get off your ass and make a better world for all of us by teaching about the past not living in it.

What a helpful little tidbit of info...I never knew that was there, except for actually seeing who is online!. If it was a guest, maybe the report to mod button should be made for registered people only.

Good thing I've got a hard time listening :gap:

Yeah, thats kinda what I meant.  Its more the reaction to the offense than the offense itself that matters, and I've just gotten to the point where I relate a person being offended with, he/she sharing how offended he/she is, but not doing anything about it.

I disagree. While none of my rants are directed at her...I obviously think she made the wrong choice. I would've told the offended one to post up their concerns and prove their point.

I do too, but I do understand she's doing her job as a moderating member of the marlin board. We, as the unresponsible members of the board can do what we want, suffer the consequences, and move on, but she's got some responsibility that we don't have.

But that would be altering history, which is wrong.  I think we should just start teaching kids to be a little tougher, and strive to make the world a better place instead of sniveling about it if they don't like it.  I also think that if we want to eliminate "black person" mabye the people of darker color should stop using it the movies music they bring into the public's eye.

:dunno:  It may not actually WORK as a guest.  I guess a mod will have to confirm?  But I just logged out and viewed this thread as a guest, and the "Report to moderator" link IS visible.  I clicked on it and it says about enter a comment to be sent to mods/admins, and please note your email address WILL be associated with your report.  I typed in that I was just testing, and clicked the button to submit it, and all it did was take me back to the general Chit Chat Camp page.  No confirmation or anything.  And obviously an email address couldn't be associated with the submission since I wasn't logged in, so maybe it doesn't actually accept reports that way?  :dunno:

To a point, I agree. How many people know the hate involved in calling someone that name? I remember "colored" entrances, drinking fountains and a lot worse. If I get so pissed at censorship...imagine how I react to being owned!

BUT, revising history is wrong...dead wrong. You have to tell it like it was, warts and all.

Actually, my family was part of the small percentage of Southerners who did own slaves. As a matter of fact the family patriarch was a slave trader. But the word has much deeper meaning and attachments than just slavery. It is a word that is pure hate...but, denying pure hate exists doesn't make it go away.

The roles have been reversed...every tribe, every group of people was held in bondage at on time or another, by somebody. Hell, I'm part Jew...everybody and their mother has had us as slaves! One thing I stress is...as a nation, the United States of America, allowed slavery for less than 80 years. It has been 143 years since the end of the "War of Northern Aggression"...get over it. Certainly the end of war didn't bring an end to ignorance or hatred...I doubt it will ever end as long as man is in control.

Blackdog don't put more into the "job" of being a moderator than there is to it... I was a global mod (whole board not just shitchat) and it wasn't a big deal to keep the board in check. ;)

Yeah, I know.  :gap: I'm assuming it isn't too difficult, I'm simply allowing for the possibility of the existence of "the ten commandments for moderators" or something.  :hahaha:

I don't know if there are hard and fast written rules, or if the mods work off their own personal opinions.  I know FFC tries to be as fair as possible, and doesn't let her own opinions get involved most of the time, but I don't know about the others.

I knew that the word would draw attention, what I don't understand is what make saying as the "N word" over just saying it. Saying "the N word" is no different that just saying it, but if you think that word is bad to say to someone try this one on for size Hey Boy, bet you get an even worse response than any other word you could use. I think you can report a thread without being a member, so anyone even a non member could have reported it.

there was actaully an incident @ work recently with it..... a white guy (regular worker), said one of the black TEAM LEADERS was a worthless N that would never amount to anything.....

that isnt right, but was never reported to HR or management, due to the fact, where we work is male dominated, and very stressful/high paced..... it isn't an excuse @ all for his behavior, but he could have played the card "oh well i thought it was ok, because i hear that word tossed around here all the time"....
