Just a thought/suggestion for you pet owners to think about.

Where do you leave your pets when you're not home?  We had a residential fire last night, and the people lost all of their belongings that were in the home.  Not only that, but they lost several pets, including a litter of puppies, because they were locked in the house, and couldn't get out.

They didn't die of the fire itself, but rather the superheated gases and smoke, which when breathed essentially incinerates the lung tissue, and then the victim suffocates.  Simply due to their size, pets are more susceptible (sp) to this, so even a small fire can kill them.  So even if you have a small fire, and don't lose much, it is very possible that you can lose a beloved member of your family.  :rivers:

I'm not saying this to make anyone feel bad, but just to get them to think about where their pets are left.  Obviously most of us will never have a fire in our home, but is it a chance worth taking?  For me, no.  when I'm at work, Max is in the garage, with a doggy door to the backyard.  I know that in case of a fire in my home, he is most likely going to be safe, hanging out in the backyard until a neighbor takes him.  In fact, he'll probably take a tennis ball up to a firefighter and want the firefighter to throw it for him. :gap:

Just thought I'd share, as it did have a pretty big impact on me.  Having to deal with the bodies of beloved pets is very painful, even if they aren't yours, and I don't want anyone to have to do that.

Wow, brings a nice lump to your throat!  I don't think I woulda got out of there without  :rivers: myself!  Our dogs were always outside, so they'd hopefully have been safe.  With the exception of Pete, our dogs always seemed to die when we went on vacation.

I've been trying to get my daughter to install, or buy..I'll install, a quality pet door. She has Nikita, a doberman and the faggoty ass little Ital Greyhound...Nikita could stay outside but the little dog would croak in an hour...hey, that gives me an idea!

We have a doggie door, but they just sleep inside all day, I'm sure. They're old and lazy.
I would hope they would have enough sense to go outside if we had a fire.
I would be devasted they died in a fire. We have a sticker on the front door to alert firefighters to the fact that there are 2 dogs inside, but I don't know if they would pay attention to it in an emergency.
We have retired neighbors all around us, and they know so hopefully it would turn out OK.

but at least they know they can go outside, and yes, I can almost gurantee they would.  In fires, animals understand they need to get out.  If the sticker is even noticed, sometimes they help.  Its hard to put too much weight on the stickers though, because people move, pets die, people get new pets, etc. and the sticker never gets removed or changed.

And ours is quite faded. Maybe I should get a new one for GP. My biggest worry would be if the fire started in the kitchen or laundry room, which is where the doggie door is located between, they couldn't get out.
I never leave the oven on, or the laundry going when I am out of the house, but still...

Nate has a good memory -- we came home a couple times (many years ago) to find a dead dog, and no clue why.  Neighbor who "cared" for them didn't know what happened, and these were young, healthy animals -- one was still a pup. Hmmmmmmmmm.......

The current beastie, my daughter's, also lives outdoors -- and if we're ever away overnight, he'll stay at the pet motel.   :yesnod:
My goal in life is to be as a good a person as my dog already thinks I am.

good thing is, they'd prolly know it before the fire even really got going, and get the hell out of dodge.  Animals are incredible when it comes to fear.  When we were in the academy, one of our instructors told us about an apt fire, when he opened the door, a beagle literally climbed up and over him to get out of the apt. (he was standing up)  he couldn't believe it.
