I have been wondering about this too. Money is a big issue right now and I thought, well I wont have to get a new dl or cross member but you have more gear options than just a low ass single case, so I am leaning towards stock duals for now and maybe later stick a 4.7 or 4.0 in the rear case.   :twocents:

watch craigslist and the forumns "for sale," I've gotten alot of good deals.  Just use caution.  It also helps to know a little about the different products so when you do find a good deal you can pounce on it.  I always haggle on price, of course most young people hate this but money talks.  And its nothing personal.

Good luck.

I'm on CL almost as much as I'm on here, a lot. Sacramento CL see's it's fair share of goodies but they are still pricey. I have seen adaptors with a crawler case going for like $300 but most of them end up being forward shift.
But, CL and the "For Sale" forum is where I do all my shopping.

Yeah, people always ask more than they'll take sometimes not but most times they will.  The dual set up I got was for a forward shift.  When I pulled the topshift cover off it already had the key stock welder on the shift fork.  I knocked the roll pin out of the slid the shift rod forward after some measuring and cut it off.  works great.

I did have High Angle build my shafts front and rear both are balanced.  but you can save coin by running a square shaft in front.

I have a 4rnr and had seen/read about running a cv shaft in the rear to keep it highway speeds possible.  So I had to rotate the axle so the pinion points to the t-case output.  This is the part that really intimidated, but it really wasn't bad at all.  May welds aren't the prettyest but I've been lucky and had friend to spend the time to teach me,  I've enjoyed learning and doing it.  But I bet that you could find someone in your area to hook you up with that part.

So with duals, you need a CV in the rear?

Depends on your set up and use, mine is still a DD.  Mine did: 4rnr=short wheel base; 4" rear springs+1.5 longer shackles.  Too much of a drive line angle.

Is there a problem running 4.7s in both cases? My last rig had 160:1 and it still wasnt low enough in the bigggg boulders sometimes. I am starting to build a new rig from an 83 and need some more gearing. Sorry to hyjack...

Just lower than I need.  I like having stock 2.28.  Heard of guys running triples, ouch

Yeah, 2.28/4.7 is PLENTY for my needs. I can't really see a practical use for that low of gears. I always figured Marlin did it because he could, not because it was necessary.

I think a 2.28 and a 2.28 is pleanty low enough. Any lower and you might as well be in reverse. lol my two cuz's have 2.28 and a 4.7 they bot love it but I still have just stock. Ya it sucks but I think that they are to low geard.

I ran the dual 2.28 first and then I did the 2.28/4.70. If I had to do it all over again and choose one I'd go with the dual 2.28's. Having the stock low range is handy and pulling both into low nets you a similar reduction to the 4.7's.

So with duals, you need a CV in the rear?

no you do not need a CV in the rear. I was running 63 chevies with long shackles without any issue. When I swapped in the IFS rear I just rotated the axle up. Never had a problem either way. I kept the CV on the front......

Cool. I keep hearing that a CV will lessen vibrations. Is that true?

it will lessen vibrations if there is a steep DL angle. If the angle is not an issue, no vibration problem!

Read up, that site is great, tons of stuff to learn.  The use of a CV will depend on how you set up your angles.

Lol, alittle off topic I see.

Duals for sure,,,   you have so many options, and makes tight spots just that much easier... Its best to do it right the first time, if at all possible...   PBB has good deals on duels and 4.7 gears all the time,,,, I just found a cheap duel adapter last week, I woulda bought it if i already wasn't doubled up!
