I'm in the process of figuring out what type of locker should I get for my daily driver truck.
I'm currently running an Aussie locker in the front and a spool in the rear :eyebrow:. I want to replace rear spool with a locker but not sure which one. I'm running 35 MT with 529 gears. What do you guys suggest for me to get ? I realize that ARB lockers are the best but I can't afford them right now. How about Detroit for DD ?  :-\

thanks for your input !

Detroits work great on the road.  Going from the spool to a Detroit, you'll notice a world of difference.

So it comes down to either Detroit or Aussie.... :-\

I know Detroit is well known but what is your experience with the Aussie in the rear when go 4wheeling ?

THK Matt

i think Aussie has been proven just as good or better then Detroit.

I've only had a Detroit or welded (spool) in my trucks I didn't mind either one. The Detroit was great never had an on road issue ever and they were all DD's my wife even drove one that had them and never complained. I've heard nothing but good things about Aussie's but have never had one.

Let me know what you're gonna do with that spool I may be interested. :gap:

I would keep the spool till you can afford a ARB or electric locker,  i hate how the detroits buck a little now and then going around corners..  the spool is always the same and consistant

I'd personally put lockers on before a lift or sas or anything else.  They work.

Go with the Aussie all around!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By the time I get the money for an SAS I'll be 65 at this rate!

Yoat Goat

I vote Aussie. Cheap, hella strong. Why not? Save the money you'd be paying for the detroit and put that into something else.

Detroit's, I run em front and rear, and its a DD.

I run a Detroit rear and an Aussie front.  The only downside to the Aussie is that the lunchbox lockers can wear out over time when the teeth wear down, BUT you can get two of them for less than a Detroit and the install is much easier.  I would expect one to last a long time in the rear and would likely be my choice if I was choosing locker now.  The Detroit is always a good bet, but you have to consider cost and ease of install.

I was told not to run a Detroit in the front of a Toyota as they can break and they will take out everything when they do.

Modification: Actually, I think it was that they likely will break from the impact load of a birfield failure.

Don't have to worry to much if you got Longs.

I run a loc-rite in the rear of my DD, wanted an Aussie but everyone was backordered.  Once I learned its quirks I love it.  If it wears out beyond pin/spring replacement I replace it.

-Matt-

personally id hold off till you can afford a selectable for the rear. don't know if you ever drive on snowy roads or do a lot of daily driving but its nice to have it be fully open when you want it to... a lot safer and saves your tires. if you already have a front locker and a spool you should just hold off till you can afford a selectable. but thats just MOP. you could even remove the spool sell it and leave it open for a while. i know you state you don't have the money but when if comes to a rear locker id either put money into a fully legit system of just rock what you have now. if you go with a detroit or aussie its still gonna lock up 75% of the time unless u only coast around corners so to put money and time into something thats not gonna be too different from a spool seems a little wasted. but all of thats jsut my opinion. either way anythings an improvement form a spool. but if all that sounds like B.S to you and your set on getting something then id go with aussie. i love mine and its the biggest bang for your buck.

locker on a DD is fine if you dont drive like an idiot

Why not just swap the 3rds, putting the Aussie in the rear and the spool up front???

i would be very worried about a spool in front...... a spool will do a lot less damage to a rear axle than it will to a front......

A spool you will always be locked in. I have a lockright (same as Aussie) in the rear of my truck and sometimes when it loads up it will pop. I have heard of when you are running them up front when they load up and unload like that they can bust a birfield. Just my  :twocents:

My rear Detroit locker really is just fine on the street.  It only locks on corners while accelerating (generally a right turn into traffic).  It is better in my 4Runner than the lighter truck and barks tires a lot less.  You will notice some added tire wear, but they don't seem to wear out, instead they just get rougher quicker.  I don't think there would be any comparison to having a spool that would alway be locked.  The biggest pain is in parking lots when it will surge at times locking and unlocking.

As long as the outside tire can turn faster than the inside tire it can unlock.  Easy throttle does it.  On the snow it isn't perfect, but I just drive slower as having the Aussie in the front makes it worse in 4wd unless there is actually snow pack and then it's great!

I'm nearly positive that the "load up" that your describing is caused when they two plates clamp together but the teeth are not meshed.  As some point the torque will overcome the pressure friction and rotate until the teeth mechanically lock.  My Aussie has never done it in the front, but the rear Detroit sounds like broken axles at times.

The Aussie and LockRight are essentially the same design, but the Aussies springs are softer allowing it to lock and unlock much smoother and easier for turning.  If you have ever handled both, the Aussie with easily mush with finger pressure and the LockRight's take some doing.
