using ifs calipers from a '92 on an 85 straight axle swap
« on: Jul 03, 2008, 02:35:47 PM »
I have a '92 and did a sas on it with an axle from an '85 and was wondering if i could run the stock calipers on the '85 axle without wheel spacers. And when I get wheel spacers, to be even with the rear should i get the 1.5" or the 2" spacer? thanks

Don't you need 1.5in spacers to match the rear's width?

When you  put the 92 calipers on, run  1.25in spacers, 58in width front and rear.   :turtle:

I used 1.5 inch spacers to match my rear axle... but apperently that is incorrect according to the above post. Oops, guess I bought the wrong ones.

alright thanks for the help.  One more question I am moving my steering box and wanted to know the easiest way of lengthening my steering shaft to my steering box?

You need 1.5" wheel spacers as the rear axle is 3" wider than the 85 SFA.

No reason you cannot run the stock disc brakes that were on the 85 as long as you have the solid rotors.  The 85 calipers and vented rotors won't work.

The easiest way to lengthen the steering shaft is to drill out the little plastic pins in the shaft so it will slide or you can lengthen it by getting some longer tubing and fabbing your own.

if you don't want to use any spacers,  use 85 landcruiser vented rotors, ifs hubs, ifs calipers.  calipers must be split apart and shaved 1/8th inch. to clear rotor.  caliper mounting holes must be drilled and retapped.

i have a 92 pickup and did that when i did my sas. i dont see why you would need to run spacers. people run them like stated earlier above, to match the width in the rear or be just a pinch wider than the rear. you using the vented rotors?

Good idea, but now isn't there a lot of stress on the two bolts between the rotor and hub?  The stock setup uses the six wheel studs as well as the two bolts to hold the hub and rotor together.

Maybe I'm not seeing the whole visual.  It's hard to tell from just one picture.

I just did my sas last wekend. finished up and went to drive off and the front tiers were froze. I used all ifs except 82 landcrusier rotors. my calipers hit on the rimms and I had to buy spacers. mine to is a 92 and it was a 85 axel.
