Yet another block year question
« on: Jun 23, 2008, 03:09:38 PM »
I'm sorry to ask this as Ihave reviewed the other threads and am still in a bit of a stupor.....

I've got a 1984 4runner with a 22r (maybe).  The previous owner had a replacement engine installed and the repair order has a block serial number of 1149521 noted.

I've taken this number to both local toyota dealers who swear they need the VIN (but of course the vin would only apply if the engine were original).  Thus we get into a circular argument.

The engine is still in the vehicle so measuring deck height is not feasible.

Can anyone decode the number? please?

On a side note the engine is only generating 110 psi in each of the 4 cylinders (same +/- 5 psi for all).  Adding oil into the cylinder did not raise the compression.  According to the FSM for a 1985, the pressure should be 142 minimum.  This would appear to be a head issue correct? (valves, etc)

Thank you in advance.

ok, i'll need you to look at the block on the drivers side near the motor mount

if its the 84-95 "short deck" it will have the little oval/saturn shaped thing on the block,  if its the 80-84  "tall deck"  it wont have the saturn shaped thing

Thank you very much.  Does the diagnosis sound right?

What is the specified cylinder pressure?  My manual I found was from the 1985 model year.

110 psi on every cylinder  means  the block should be rebored  and  over sized pistons installed, aka rebuild

BUT  as long as it runs ok,  and doesnt burn alot of oil ........... drive it

Thank you again.  Only issue is a lack of power, but I'll work my way through.

31s, 4.10 stocks f/r, I just bought it 4 months ago.  It has 225k on the odometer, but a refurb engine was installed at 110k.

So far I've done the full front axle kit (bearings, etc), rear seals, marlin sliders and rear bumper, fit an FJ soft top to it, t-case e-brake kit, and basic maintenance.   A roll cage is next on the list and then traction, lift and steering will be addressed.

It is a New Mexico vehicle so very little rust.

I'm gonna give that a good read.

I was good and introduced myself in the new members and added a couple of pics.

See a first gen 4runner strapping a H3!
