Wow, I never knew so many people have had bad experiences with bicyclists. We have h-u-g-e bike lanes here and they are plentiful. I've never seen any bicycle rider stopping traffic or almost getting hit by a car.

I love riding my 1997 Klein Mantra to work and even up to and around the numerous lakes we have near by and I've never had a motorist be aggressive or do anything intentional to me.

I like bicycle riding and have many bicycle riding buddies  :twocents:

Florida is rated as one of the worst states for cyclists. We have hardly any bike lanes and the ones they do have are very narrow.
And our problem is not with your every day cyclist out for a nice ride or going to work, it's the training racers that think they are the kings of the road and can do whatever they please.

I'm with you, I grew up riding everywhere and rode all the way through high school, even after buying a truck.  I figured out I put well over 5,000 miles, probably more like 6,000+, on my first mountain bike before retiring it.  I just wish I lived in a place where I could ride more easily, and that I had the time to ride.  I'd be in a lot better shape now!

I was on the bicycling team in school, we used to ride from Santa Monica to Ventura and back on PCH. It was manditory to ride single file while training on streets, we'd start out on the bike paths but once past Pacific Palisades we had to hit the highway we could have easily road two a breast  and been legal but our school said it was too dangerous. It sure does teach you how to pace the person in front of you when you tires are an inch or two apart.

One bobble from a frontrunner and it would have looked like 'the big one' on the high banks of Daytona or Talledega.   :haha:

Just like it, run as close to the guy in front of you to pick up the draft. Makes it so much easier to pedal behind someone, but yeah it gets ugly when someone up front even slows, looks just like the big one.

So the real story is that some dumbass tried to pass the bikers and ended up with a car coming straight at him, which swerved to not hit him, and hit the bikes instead.

So the guy in the other car on the wrong side of the street was getting the hell out of the way. I knew there was more to that picture than what it looked like.

Yeah, it didn't even occur to me that that black car was trying to pass the cyclists.
So he pulled into the oncoming cars lane, and because the oncoming car's driver was drunk he swerved into the cyclists to avert a head on collision with the black car.
Even though the driver that hit them was drunk I think the driver of the black car was as much at fault if not moreso.

The other question.. who took this picture? Was someone video taping the race?

Oh, nevermind, the first picture doesn't show the black car...

Oh wait... according to the article the driver that hit the cyclists was drunk and passed out, so the black car may have been the one avoiding a collision with him

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -- A car plowed into a weekend bike race along a highway near the U.S.-Mexico border, killing one and injuring 10 others, police said.

Police apprehend Juan Campos, who is charged with killing one of the cyclists.
The 28-year-old driver was apparently drunk and fell asleep when he crashed into the race , said police investigator Jose Alfredo Rodriguez.

A photograph taken by a city official showed bicyclists and equipment being hurled high into the air by the collision.

Rodriguez said Juan Campos was charged with killing Alejandro Alvarez, 37, of Monterrey.

Authorities said the wreck happened 15 minutes into the 34-kilometer (21 mile) race Sunday along a highway between Playa Bagdad and Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.

Campos said he is an American citizen living in Brownsville. The U.S. Consulate could not immediately confirm that.

"We are looking into the incident in terms of whether American citizens were involved,"

Actually, I think that black car is a police car. This is the second picture on the CNN site of the police arresting Campos.

Damn! it is! Same stripe!

Bad luck for that guy.

Why didn't the cop block?

Lady Di

It probably all happened so fast. He was probably with the race, maybe he saw the car coming swerving and pulled out to stop him.
Too bad there is not a follow up to the story.

If you look closely at his tires of the police car, he's moved into a position to block the car.  Normally, 99.99999999% of the time, a driver seeing a cop in their lane at an angle would stop.  Police always run alongside bike races like this to keep drivers at bay.

The drunk moron tried to go around the cop.(Bike riders - what's that?)  By the looks of the angle of the riders(and the one that's stopped by the side of the road), most appear to have slowed or stopped when the police car moved to intercept the other driver.
