89 1-ton...Ran 21 road, flopped
« on: May 01, 2008, 09:18:20 PM »
Well...I had catastrophic failure on Helldorado that has once again put my truck down.  Me and the guys spent two days on a trail that can be walked on foot in about 10 minutes.  I broke another front ring and pinion, a rear ring and pinion, both rear shafts, and busted the welds on the rear lincoln locker.  I also snapped my winch line trying to pull this no wheel drive pile off the last waterfall in Helldorado.  I noticed the front of my exo hung me up everywhere so that has to be changed, my rear 4 link tries to roll me on every off camber obstacle, the bed impairs alot of my vision so that's going away too.  I can't seem to keep 5.29's alive soo, I'm going to a 60 and 14 bolt since theyre laying in my garage.  Those axles should give me the strength I need, and widen my track so I don't roll all the time.  I'm gonna try the rear suspension again, I'm gonna position the shocks very far out on the axle this time and also add limiting straps.  I believe this thing is soo unstable since the rear end is just unloading every chance it can get.  I also had my front driveshaft come apart on me twice.  That has never happened before.  I've never blown a rear axleshaft before, and Boggerrunner blew the output in his rear case, also has never happened to us before.  Heres some pics of the weekend.  I'm also uploading a video soon of the Extraction of my truck up the last waterfall.

The Trail Head

First Obstacle

Second Obstacle...everyone did pretty good here except me.

See what I mean

Boggerrunner on the obstacle before the Waterfall...alot of body and drivetrain carnage here, my cage just hung up and this is where I busted a rear shaft and the front R&P.  Bogger also broke his t-case here trying to turn around.

Zach was planning on an exo too.  Maybe too late?  His virgin drivetrain held up the best with zero breakage.

I talked to one of you guys when you were broken down. We ran that short trail right by the start of Helldorado on sunday. Mad carnage man, helldorado takes some hairy nuts to attempt. Props to you guys.

If I would have known that the 1/4 elipt truck was up there I would have come up to check it out.

yeah my grey excab and erics 89 sat there overnight waiting on parts from grand junction, we were lucky to get at least one out to get back to camp which was 4 or 5 miles away.

Started some changes.  Going with a Corp 14 bolt with discs in the rear, once I have that in I'll move to the front where I'll sling my Dana 60 in.  The rear cage and bed is being ditched in lieu of a narrow flatbed.  From the flatbed I'll mount hoops for the rear 14" shocks.  I'm going through bluetorch to get the 14 bolt truss...then all is needed is welding link perches and the rear axle is in.

Choppin the cage

Pulled the bed

Gotta finish finding the right spot...I'll wait for daylight.

Definetly gonna modify the front cage, I'm not gonna dovetail the front, my body is still good and dovetailed fronts always end up looking retarded.

That's my old hanger I built originally for the toy axle.  I have Sky's full width kit on the way so I'll cut the old stuff off and weld in the new sky kit.  I just threw the axle under there for looks and to see where the pumpkin ends up in relation to the driveline.

:nonono: cinder blocks bad

I know, but look close, all the weight is on the cherry picker.  The cinder blocks are for just in case the picker wants to bleed off all of a sudden.  Safety first!

Saweet, got my camera working again.  Well, I scored some 15x10 8 lugs and some new winch line the other day at a swap meet.  In the mean time I got this thing all welded up, started painting, and built some diff armor.  My new hubs and rotors also came in.  Pretty soon I'll be making some new pinion flanges by taking the existing 60/14 bolt yoke, turning them down and welding on a toy flange to the yokes.
