Total Chaos Caddy 2 Kit... Thoughts?
« on: Apr 27, 2008, 11:32:30 PM »
Ok, with the recent introduction of a 1990 pickup to my small stable of rigs, I have been thinking. I am going to keep the IFS. I don't want anyone posting about SAS-ing it, please and thank you.

Now that I have that out of the way, any opinions on the Total Chaos Caddy 2 kit? I am putting a 1 inch body lift on this truck, and it will be my DD/lighter trails truck, and I figure the Caddy 2 kit would be the perfect thing to do to get the most out of the IFS and have good DD manors, while still keeping it 4wd.

Post up your opinions, and if you have done it, what all needs to be done? I know I will need T-100 axles, and I will not be able to use stock fenders (I will probably go fenderless for quite a while). What length coil over should I use? 8 inch or 10 inch? Any specific brand recommendations?

This will all happen much later in time, but I figured I might as well research it now.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

You should SAS it, IFS can't do anything, it won't go anywhere, you'll break it the first time it hits dirt, you can't wheel IFS for crap   :cheese:

Ok, now that we got that out of the way, if this is going to be your light trail/DD rig, why go this route?  The TC system is cool, but it is pretty dang pricey.  If you're talking about bombing through the desert, that type of stuff, I'd go with it all the way, but if you're talking about dirt roads, some mud, mild rock trails etc, I'd leave your stock IFS on there  and spend the $$ elsewhere.

Nah, the 85 will be for mud/rocks/dirt roads and stuff... this truck will be DD/ fun toy. Maybe I don't NEED it, but I WANT it. Or at least opinions on it. Hitting table top speed bumps at 80 mph, jumping cattle guards, flying over rail road crossings, bombing down desert roads...

Thats why I asked   I'd definitely go with it if thats what you want to do with it.  I've heard nothing but good about them, the design is well thought out, and the customer service is good.  :yesnod:  from what I've heard anyway   I'd give them a call about the coils, they'd prolly be able to give you the best suggestions.

Ok, thanks for the input BLACKDOG!

When it comes time to actually do it (If I am going to do it) I will probably spend A LOT of time on the phone with them to get everything sorted out.

a guy at the local Toyota stealership has a TC T-100, he said he put $5000 into the front end alone!   :yikes:
I've been considering a TC setup for balls out fire road blasting though and it's supposed to hold up well to moderate rock crawling.

Hmm... maybe he could jump on this thread and give some pointers? But doesn't a 3rd gen 4 runner utilize a different suspension design than a 3rd gen truck?

well i see it like this IFs   stock> procomp stage2 > TC
Just keep inmind if you go TC you got install T100 axles.

Personnel  if i had a wheeling truck   and a DD   I would not do more then a 1" 4crawler body lift and a set of BFG ATs and maybe a locker.  Makes no sence spending that much 4x4  $$ :bling: on a DD when you got a wheeler.

This is true, and that is the exact 1 inch body lift I was going to put on it! Then I was thinking either buying my dad's used BFG A/Ts off of him or buying some Cooper Discoverer STs.

If I do this kit, it will be at least 10 years down the road. This is just a sort of feeler thread, and I am glad I am recieving this much of a response!

Did you have the caddy 2 kit? or one of the two caddy 1 kits? If you had a caddy two kit, what coil overs did you use? Thanks.

There is nothing wrong or unsafe about a properly built 1 inch body lift like the ones that can be bought from 4crawler. Please explain to me why you feel this is unsafe. Thanks.

If you can afford it I've got two words for you: DO IT.

My buddy ran the gen 1 caddy kit on his 93 and we rallied the piss out of it and it rode smooth as glass even after 1000s of miles of pure abuse. jumped it at sand mountain a few times over 10 feet above the ground. usually the only damage at the end of the day was a bruised up driver and co pilot :D Well worth the big $$$ and you can still crawl with it, great for a multipurpose rig  :twocents:

When done right, small body lifts have 0 effect on safety.  Small being 3" or under IMO.

i guess a small body lift wouldnt be a problem but i would be worried about forcing the BL through the cab floor after a hard hit. :dunno:

i guess a small body lift wouldnt be a problem but i would be worried about forcing the BL through the cab floor after a hard hit. :dunno:

Solution: install LARGE "load spreading" plates between lift block and cab. A 3" washer or square plate will spread the force over a larger area. They could also be welded to the bottom of the cab. Use at least 1/8" steel for this.

So roughly how much would the TC caddy 2 cost if you were to do the install yourself?

like $1800 for just the kit, no coil overs, and the extras go up from there. Plus coil overs are not exactly cheap. If I were to do mine, I would be looking at around $2500 for the options I want.
