Total Chaos or SAS...
« on: Jul 11, 2010, 08:30:13 AM »
Ok, time to make a decision...

Anyone point me at a SAS vs IFS lift (a good one like TC, not Superlift) comparo? Looks
like fourwheeler.com started down the path, building one of each, the petered out (or didn't post it to their website, then failed to indicate which issue to buy)
http://www.fourwheeler.com/brandpages/129_0501_toyota_ifs_truck_suspension/installation_finished_product.html for the TC article

I would really like 37s, but the few lifted SAS trucks I've ridden in have had a really rough ride.

So I'm seeing 33s and a TC kit (prolly a Caddy II) as a probable outcome.

What I'm looking for
- excellent pavement manners and good ride (my 88 K5 Blazer was fine, the Cherokee was awesome)
- still flat towable
- medium rock crawling (Rubicon and up)
- high speed desert (keep up with or pass my mid-travel Rhino which does knee-deep whoops at 30, just like my JeepSpeed Cherokee did. Yeah, the bar is a bit high. LOL)

You may want to get a few of the back issues as well so you can see the begining.

It depends on what kind of wheeling you do. The article talks about that also. Mild to light wheeling and daily drivers ifs is better. Hard core goes to sas. Long travel ifs is the future but not enough people are make hardcore parts yet. As again the article talks about. If you are worried about ride quality I would go ifs all day.
If you see it, its for sale.

My other straight axle vehicles have ridden fine. The 85 and SAS Toys I've ridden in, lifted, have not. Just wondering if that's typical.

The K5 with dual Detroits, 1 ton drivetrain, and 36 swampers was wandery, but the ride was quite decent.

If you wanna be able to hit deep whoops at 30 and have an excellent ride it seems like you should stick with the IFS and go with the TC kit...

Then for the rock crawling part of it, dual cases, lockers, and basic armor and you should be ok... :twocents:

i have a tc gen1 caddy kit on my runner. works great for what it is but the torstion bars kinda hold me back a little. i do need to change the rear from 62" chevy springs to deavers and it would be alot better. truck hauls butt in the desert and does ok in the mountains
