Til they are tight....too tight and it will squeeze your bushing out and the suspension can bind...too loose is not good either....thats my understanding anyways

anyone know the torque spec of a muffler bearing?

To correctly answer this, we must define what a muffler bearing is.  It is a recirculating ball type valve that opens when the engine is running and closes when it is not to prevent debris and small animals from entering the engine through the exhaust system.  Some of them are sealed, and some are greaseable.  If it's greaseable, you will see a zerk fitting somewhere on the muffler, usually on the top towards the front.  Removal of the muffler may be nessecary to view the fitting.  Otherwise, if it has no zerk fitting, it is sealed.  If it's sealed, the torque spec is 22 1/3 in-lbs.  If it's greaseable, it's as tight as you can go, then back off 1/4 turn.  However, if you overtorque it, it may seize up, and when this happens, it's usually in the closed position, preventing your engine from running for more than a few seconds.  When the bearing begins to go bad, it will usually make a tinny metallic rattling noise.  If you hear this noise, take it to a certified mechanic immediately and insist that it is the muffler bearing and don't take no for an answer.  The noise is most commonly misdiagnosed as a loose heat shield, and if left unchecked, can cause major damage to the engine and exhaust system.

Wow, are you a certified Toyota mechanic?  :suprised:

OK....next question is where can I find a torque wrench that measures in thirds of a pound? Harbro Freight?
