Guy here in KS wants to trade me this for the Beastmaster.
1988 F250 7.3 IDI diesel.  Whatchall think?

"he wants to trade"

didnt you just dump a bunch of $$ into yours? are you ready to do it again with this ?

CTENG in KS

This one just needs to be cleaned up mostly.  Should get better mileage towing as well.

The Beastmaster makes taking long trips VERY expensive.  5-6 MPG towing is a little cost prohibitive.  I was thinking this would be a bit more practical and give me something to pick up steel with as well.  I really don't need a 1.5 ton vehicle to tow a toyota.

ATS makes a turbo kit and Banks makes a Sidewinder turbo kit for the 7.3L.  From what I read I can expect 17-18 unloaded, 12-14 towing depending on conditions.  It is going to double my mileage, plus, with the dual tanks on the F250, it will nearly double my range.

No...not spending that much time with the tow rig.  I am hoping this one, once cleaned up, will leave me more time to the 4Runner instead of getting the tow rig ready for trips simultaneously.

The bed in the Beast only fits me curled in fetal position.  It ain't anything spectucular.  I may go for it, I think the pickup suits my needs more efficiently.  I will see what the guy says later today.

CT, Matt has that same body style truck and he LOVES IT! You can put a shell on the back and sleep in there (that's what we do when we go camping), and it's fantastic! The back seat also folds down into a bed (if you're about 5' tall or shorter

I'd say do it! But not before you go over that thing with a fine tooth comb.  Make sure it's as sound as the Beastmaster before you do it.

what's the mileage on that thing. If you do get it, and there is a lot of miles on it I would not recommend putting the turbo kit on it...lower end go boom.  I have a customer who put the banks unit on his early 90s 280XXX F350 and it killed it within a few months.

I will look into all these things.  For now I would be keeping it NA.  The idea is to get a good foundation truck that runs and tows well reliably.  I will look into the tranny as well, I did verify that it has had a cooler on it for most of its life, so hopefully it hasn't been overheated too much.

FFC, there are a couple inexpensive toppers in CL around here as well, I was thinking that sleeping int he bed would work out perfectly.

It might look funny, but if you get the extended shell it'll be a lot easier camping out of.

Like this one:

BLACKDOG

Do it!

The 7.3 is a good motor, a shell is easy to find for those trucks, and if you don't care about taking it off/putting it on a lot, you can silicon it to the bed, and it'll seal up real well.  We've got a guy on the dept. that has one, double cab though, with a shell, and he put some old gym lockers along both sides, and built a small box in the middle, with a plywood lid that he put a small mattress on (cot mattress I think) He uses it for hunting, keeps his guns under the bed, and stores all his camping gear and clothes in the lockers.  He said he was going to put a space heater in there, but wound up not having too, because his body heat wound up heating the inside well enough that he could sleep comfortably, even in -20* weather (worst he's had it in.)  He did the silicon thing to the shell, and its tight as a drum in there.

Even if MPG and fuel cost were equal (which they're not) the extra torque with a diesel makes would ice the deal for me.

One of the toppers around here is like that, extended a bit higher than the roof.  Under $100 cause it needs some paint.

Rocksurfer

Here's what I think about this. Yes the beast in unique but is it practical for what you want? You could easily put a small camper on this and be real comfy, even a small cabover with a stove, crapper and a shower would be possible and you could still tow with it. Check it out real careful and if you feel good about it..... :yesnod:

For me it'd be a no brainer if it was well maintained and ran well too.  A local guy puts an ati charged 7.3 and a naturally aspirated 7.3 on cl for a decent price every now and then, and I keep thinking that'd be a neat swap into a 70ish f250/f350.

Uh oh...he is waffling!!!  Smells like he might back out.  He isn't sure if he wants to trade or just sell the F250 outright for the money.  Maybe the Beast is staying with me for a while longer??
