Rear axle, inner seal install
« on: Mar 17, 2008, 08:35:06 PM »
I just destroyed my new inner seal trying to install it on my '00 4runner.

I put the seal in the freezer overnight and tried to tap them in with a big socket.  Didn't want to go it so I tapped harder.  Then in went in cadiwompus and I noticed I dented the metal part of the seal pretty good.

I'd like to get it right the next time.  Going to the dealer tommorow to get a new seal maybe a few extras just in case. Any suggestions on getting this thing in their?

Thanks

Just make sure it's stays straight & tap lightly.

I probably hit it too hard.  I started soft but it didn't want to go.  :_order: with a little more force :_order:  :smack:

Looking at the manual, of course they suggest a SST.  At this point I almost am willing to buy the SST just to get it done.

I dont usually recommend using hardened sockets for this reason.......

I usually use wood....either a broom handle, hammer handle or something similar with a flat surface

Harbor Freight has a seal driver set for cheap. Under $10.00 if I remember right.

X whatever.  Use wood or spend a few bucks on a driver kit.
