Started my half door project. body people will probably be scared but its turning out well I think. slightly differnt than most on the road...I also did not like the look or function of them being cut super low. some might argue this is not much of a cut but it should be alot better than a full door in terms of outside point of view. It will also give a arm rest since its about that right height

I spent alot of time drawing to figure out what I wanted, height, width etc. here is the rough cut

the center section I had planned just to fold over to have one less thing to cut and weld. well it didnt work out as planned. about an inch shy of what i needed. It was hard to measure the width of the door before cutting it apart.

the inside is a typical door with all the moldings and holes given for access. It would have been too hard to try and fill everything in to the very uneven inner sheet metal. i cut it all out of filled it in too.

this is where it sits now. still have to get the latch in, maybe a cup holder then weld it all. I did run out of 18guage sheet tho. my scrape piece I bought was not quite enough once I messed up the center section.

I like how you did yours, I may be hacking mine up in the near future, to take advantage of that space :gap:

i like em both. a cup holder is key for sure

Padded cup holders and storage space would be a pretty bitchin combo!  Yours don't look hacked to me, but I aint no body man either.

sick! thats the best inside finish Ive seen. I was planning on doing that same thing for a trim panal. you have any inside pics of the cubby hole? unfinished?

yeah I had thought about storage but kinda said f it cause it seemed like alot more work to get in there. 4 more peices to fit and cover. dunno Il think about it today and maybe redesign a little. I am diggin how light these doors are now tho, a full door is heavy!

I really did not want a speaker since it would have to be wired and have to richard with that when swaping. not really need it. Its a trail truck so the cb prevails mostly. I do need to swap my manual stuff to my auto full doors.

OOPS

Thanks

Sorry no pictures. I cut the inside of the door as you did, used a piece of aluminum plate, built the box, and pop riveted it to the panel and pop riveted the plate on the door. The reason I used the aluminum because it was left over from when I made the deck on the flatbed. The panels are made from 1/8 inch Masonite and upholstery vinyl.

I do not like cup holders in the doors because of the dust and sun, my cup holder is between the bucket seats.

As far as the wiring for the speakers, this is what I did.

Nice doors. I agree on the storage space, even if for nothing more than trash   :dunno:

When I put speakers in my doors, I just ran the wires through a hole near the hinge, used some quick connects, and stuck them back through the hole.  When I switch doors, I just pull the wiring a bit, and disconnect the quickconnects, and then connect the speakers in my full doors the same way.

So far about 8hours into this project on one door...I hope to cut the time in half on the next one. I got most of the door welded up and ground but still need to do a couple small things including build a door panel for it.. I dont have my hinges in yet but I had to take the door off anyway so figured why not mount it up to see the fit

filling in the hole for the lock and door handle

I kinda messed this up, remember Im not a body man so this is good for me. might be hard to see but if you look close and feel it with your hand you can tell its not even. probably took too much off trying to flush out the welds. I could run some filler to fill in my screwups. I am trying to keep in mind the chance of getting smashed on the rocks and feeling bad about spending hours on body work so I think a little rattle can primer in flat tan or white will do the trick.

I love the cut. I can lean out and see so much more than a full door without the ugly look taking the doors all the way off. I think the cut height is perfect. only catch is the top is not perfectly flat and got a little heat warpage. again me being anal. I have not aligned the door in this pic. just bolted it on for a test fit.

looking good i will be doing that real soon to mine and my sons truck.
toyotas are like tonka trucks of old built to beat the hell out of

interesting tidbit.....11lbs lighter per door

Doof

can i get your measurements?

with the angle of the --> \___/  <--

DieselD

Ill measure in a bit....

here is the finished deal. got my hinges on and aligned for both sets of doors. swaping is a breeze.

here I was testing out a flat tan...but think I will stick with primer. nothing is really going to match.primer matches the interior tho

DieselD

hope this helps some with building their own. I looked at alot of doors and didnt like much of what i saw. I took a little bit of design aspect from the countless Ive seen and tweaked it to my liking. I think it came out to be a good looking door and differnt than most. glad you guys like it.

case in point not to stress on getting it perfect if your going to be in the rocks. kinda glad I had these to bang up instead of my good full doors I hit it right where I was unhappy about my filler panel for the latch and lock. solves that! I love them on the trail tho. I can see so much more and they are comfortable. They give much needed protection from brush, water/mud flying up along with cow pies......

Yota87Truck

like the half doors... and i like the idea of keeping the whole frame of the whole door so it covers the molding all the way around the edge

DieselD

I dont like them without the frames. looks incomplete. IMO

Steve_925

looks really cleen. i just did my second set, my first doors where really low this time my new door is like yours, cut pretty high. i would rather have alot of protection and sacrafice a little sight. mine doesnt look so clean though

CRS

Doors look killer glad to see someone else took the time to some nice doors instead of the usual hack jobs

DieselD

interesting, how did you finish yours? sheetmetal and filler? looks awesome tho! does it have the hollow beer can sound when shutting? I know mine did before putting a panal on it

my panel is going to be flat and simple. I should be able to just get vinyl, wrap it on my base fiberboard and glue/staple and be done. screw it to the door with self taping screws. Im not going for show quality but something thats fairly clean. its a rock crawler not a show truck. I might even just bring it to  shop and throw the guys a few bucks. We have a interior shop we deal with so should cost much
