What do you have for a tow rig and why??
« on: Jun 27, 2004, 07:28:17 PM »
I use a 2 ton Chevy flatbed.  My Jeep rides on the truck and my Toyota is trailered behind.  I would like some input as to what people are using and why.  I would like to switch to either a truck/camper or a motor home...getting tired of the tent thing.  I don't know a lot of people with motor homes or campers so I figured this would be a way to get some good opinions.

You should get a truck with a canopy and tow the flatbed trailer behind it.  Like maybe a F-250 Powerstroke with a canopy, so you can sleep back there.  Then tow your trail rig on a trailer.

I have a 4-Runner & it tows itself around pretty well most of the time. I don't want a trailered rig. I travel all over the western U.S. with it.

We just bought a little motorhome just before goldndale. The plan is to find a trailer that can handle my truck and some extras. But it takes time. The main reason is the wife HATES riding trails with me. but she still want's to go :smack:. So now she and the baby can stay in the motorhome.

I've been on trail runs over 100 miles from here and drove there and back.  Kinda sucks driving home with a skid plate ripped off the frame, broken springs, no brakes, or my windshield smashed all up after I rolled it.  I kind of have a tuff time with the fuzz having fullsize running gear, beadlocks, no windshield, no flaps or flares.  I still sneak it out all of the time to go on small day runs around here.  I love living in a small town with lots of back roads :)

i would have to agree with 81toy4x. a f250 powerstroke with a canopy or camper would be a nice setup. maybe even a dodge.

When I'm wheelin with just one or two people in my rig, I drive it to where I'm going. When I have the whole family(There's 5 of us) and doing day trips out of our camp, I flat tow my rig with a 2002 F250 CC Stuper Duty 4x4. It has the a V10 with the six speed manual and 4:30 gears. Ouch on the fuel. I just ordered a Dodge 4X4 Crew Cab with a Hemi cause the Ford is going
Why the Dodge? More ponies, better gas mileage and the wife wants a new DD.
She said NO WAY to the Dodge Magnum :slap:
Oh Yah, I am limited on mechanical abilities, so if i break :nerv:

I've been on trail runs over 100 miles from here and drove there and back.

Just drove mine 700 miles each way from Portland to Fordyce and back, first run on the truck, I was a little nervous about breakage and making it back home.

I got to see Bobby Long's setup at Goldendale. Semi tractor with a sleeper towing a car hauler with a bathroom, small kitchen area and large bedroom area. That would be the way to go if you had the $$$. Load the wheeling truck in the hauler/trailer home & away you go. He said they were getting around 14 or 15 mpg.

I'm towing my Toy with a '99 Ford PSD 4x4 dually on an 18 ft. Bri-Mar trailer. I will be getting some sort of in-the-bed camper at some point, hopefully a Lance.

I'd like to see a full picture of your tow rig.. It would be cool to tow without towing (put my truck up on the flatbed)

I use a 93 Ford Clubwagon with a IDI 7.3 Diesel. It is Clubwagon so it has a full interior, not conversion that is too much. 15 passenger, there is one bench with room to sleep between it and the front, full power buckets. And enough room behind the bench for a craftsman rolling bottom box (my MAC won't fit though ::) ) It needs a turbo or something to really tow, I can do 75 easy enough but more is pretty hard.

I would love the cheap 4wd of a truck but the interior space can't be beat. My trailer is 16 ft including a 2 ft dove. My friend and I built the trailer from a frame and axles, we put the deck on. About 600 lbs of steel courtesy a hook up at the steel place.

And the best part was the van was 2400 and I ma about 1000 into the trailer counting new load range e tires. I will post pics later today.
