Complete VIN decoder
« on: Feb 07, 2008, 07:48:12 PM »
I am looking for a chart or website that has a complete VIN decoder for Toyota trucks and 4Runners. I have found a few online but nothing that gave real complete information. The one on 4Crawler does not work on my VIN :dunno: Thanks.

Ok if you go to 4x4wire.com and under toyota faq and somewhere around there is codes for just about everything, not sure what your looking for but it gives base models, what where made and what were changed plus gives you a thing to decode your code off your truck and see what you got. Does this help?

This one works good. Thanks. I wanted one that would specify truck or 4runner and engine size.

That type of VIN is really just a model+serial number. It doesn't describe any of the features of the truck like newer VIN's do. You have to use the plate under the hood to determine engine, trans, axle, etc.

That's not true, sure you don't get as much info on earlier VIN's but there is some info there like where it was made and if it were a special edition vehicle but that's about all you can get from them. Even some late model VIN's can be vague though, as an example there is no digit on the Buick Regals to denote which one is a GNX (Grand National) and which one is just a plain Regal. Kinda sucks in determining if it is a fake or not, but it does hide what it is from your insurance.

On early models there should be a VIN tag that will tell you almost anything you need to know, at least my chevy's did. I had a 66 Chevelle the VIN tag told told me that it was a coupe and should have a 327 engine, hydroglide trans and it was originally painted forest green. Not only that it will even tell you the month and week it was built. Looking at the vehicle comfirmed these few listed items, it came with split buckets and a center shift console with the dual bar lever, had no window frames, just not having window frames in itself denotes that it is a coupe, which is the platform a SS is made from. It's been a long time since I was into retro cars and would really have to bone-up on the codes within the tags but I was able to narrow down what I had by that tag. Not all the info on old cars came within the VIN # itself so you have to read and decifer those extra numbers and letters on the tag that don't have anything to do with the VIN itself.

My Chevy Elcamino told me it was a SS 454 with a 4 speed, color was black and it was a stripe delete. Sadly when I got it the 454 and the trans were long gone.

under the hood,  NOT  under  side of the hood,   its actually  on the  pass side  inner fender  ,  and on the  firewall tag just behind the valvecover

Like a few people already said, any online VIN decoder will only work with the newer 17 digit VIN numbers.
Thats pretty much from 2nd gen PU's, 4runners, and FJ60's and later. For the 1st gen PU's and FJ40/55's, and anything else pre-1981, the only thing the VIN will tell you is the model number and serial number. For more detail, you have to decode the numbers on the underhood plate.

I have dealer parts microfiche for the 1st gen PU's, FJ40/55's, 2nd gen PU's  & 4runners, and a few other Toyota models. There is a list on the fiche that breaks everything down.

An example is my 1st gen PU is something like RN37L-TMKR.  This is what will REALLY tell you more about the vehicle than your VIN.
