stock 90 4 runner , what to expect with the v6
« on: Feb 07, 2008, 06:32:26 PM »
looking at buying a 90 runner v6 auto. i dont know much about the v6 other than problems with the head gaskets. what should i look for. this would be a daily driver for the wife around town. superduty isnt all that economical.

expect an overweight, underpowered slug....and they only get about 14-15 mpg.  Other than that they're fine.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

5 grand is too much for a 1990.  You can find a 96-99 for that much if you look.  They'll have the much better 3.4

Depends on where you're at.  The farther west you go, the more $$ toyotas cost.  It does seem high though, for a 90, unles its in great shape.

For just daily driving, the v6 and the auto will be ok.  Its not speed demon, but it'll get you there.  The auto is a pretty weak system, but for just DDing it, it'll be fine.

brother paid 5K for his 95 with the 3.slow. wasn't in the greatest condition and still isn't. he put a jacobs ignition system on it to get a little more power and economy but i think he only get like 17 or maybe 19 on the highway. he's got an auto too and really doesn't like it. i think if it had a different engine and tranny it would be really fun. ride is great stock stereo is decent and it's just an all around decent vehicle except for the drivetrain.
lets not and say we did.

You are better off looking for a later 3rd gen 4runner with a 3.4, better power and MPG.  I'd probably consider a 3rd gen with a 4cyl/5spd over a 2nd gen with a 3.0/auto.  Power is same or better and MPG is outstanding for a SUV.  Many are getting 20+ mpg

We have a '92 in the family.  It really struggles when you get up in altitude.  And I think it gets 13mpg in normal driving.  Makes my 2000 feel fast
