1KZ-TE into a 40. Drivetrain ?'s
« on: Jan 28, 2008, 03:12:07 PM »
Hi,

I have a '78 FJ40 with a chevy V8. There is no tranny or t-case in the truck right now and I want to go to a 1kz-te diesel.

The problem is the length of the 1kz-te. With an auto tranny and t-case out of a 4-runner its a hair over 6 ft long from the crank pulley to the rear output flange. I don't think i'll have enough room for much of a rear driveshaft and the rear output is centered. I did some quick and dirty measurements on saturday and it looks like i'll need a sub 17" driveshaft and a centered rear axle housing. Does that seem too short? it does to me. I'll probably not do any serious rock crawling with it just play around on the trails.

One other issue is that i'd like to have an overdrive since the diesel won't rev like a gasser.

I have the following:
R151F w/t-case out of a Turbo truck.
Original 4spd cruiser case w/th400 adapter installed.
sm420/plate/4spd cruiser case that bought and never put behind the V8.
*maybe* get a cheap nv4500 from my uncle.

I think the r151F will be shorter than the A340 auto so i'll convert it if i can't get a manual 1KZ.
I have a source for the proper bellhousing and flywheel.

History:
The V8 Th-350 combo i bought the cruiser with had a 17.75" rear drive shaft. The splines on the adapter gear for the kit developed stress cracks and the original installer/genius welded the input shaft to the rear t-case bearing. So the th-350 kit is scrap. i rebuilt the t-case a long time ago and got a th400 adapter for it but never got around to putting it in. a little while later I bought the sm420 and t-case but never got around to it either. I've finally gotten all my other projects out of the way and now can get it finshed.

So What is my best bet to get a 5 spd behind the 1KZ that will be short enough to give me a rear driveshaft? I don't mind getting a centered axle if I have to.

Thanks,

Todd

i dont think the a340  would ever stand up to the 1KZTE

the landcruiser  auto  is shorter

kinda defeats the purpose of a 5sp though don't you think? maybe i'll just do a direct drive then I won't have to shift.  :burnout:

nice work on your rig BTW.

if i were you i would put a different toyota diesel in there, the 1KZ-te is a 4 cylinder diesel that are placed in hilux and prados. check out the inline 6 cylinder diesel's in austalian landruisers. they would fit nicely into the engine bay of a 40 landcruiser, there are many companies that specialize in toyota diesel engines, tranny's and halfcuts. good luck!!

The last two for $3300 each. But it depends on condition, mileage, cost, and what they come with. I should have one in about a month but I might be keeping it for this project depending on my bank account health. So far its been a slow process to get them over here. once they are bought and pulled from the donor vehicles it takes about 6 weeks on a boat.

Back on topic: What do you folks think about a H55F? They seem to be shorter than the R151F and I can just use the FJ60 split case. The only problem is making a bellhousing to fit, oh and getting an H55F.

Engine, tranny, tcase, Ecu, wiring harness, fuel filter, and whatever else they decide to pull off. I have requested more stuff like the inst. cluster, driveshafts, 4wd computer, spill valve relay, etc. but I haven't gotten any since then.

Thanks to the EPA I believe it is, you can no longer import half cuts. The engine can no longer be attatched to any of the body of a vehicle. You might be able to find a half cut that someone bought before the cutoff date. I can't get them though.

Weird, Spector offroad just started advertising in Toyota Trails that he is selling them. They must be the ones he started bringing in a couple years ago.

Or maybe i've been lied too. Wouldn't be the first time. ;) I think the half cut thing started with Jarco. Someone told them they could no longer import engines with any kind of the body attached. I've just heard it through the grapevine though, never seen anything official.

no more half-cuts are true...........I mess around with hondas/acuras JDM parts and they sure did stop the halfcut with motor for a few years now. Even one of my local JDM improter even said so.I've asked him before when I started seeing his halfcuts with no motors..............So yeah , its true.........
