22R Cams
« on: Jan 13, 2008, 01:03:59 PM »
I have  a 86 toyota 22R carb, I'm getting the head ported/polished/shaved. Is it worth the money to buy a performance cam, will it make a difference at low rpm's if so which one is the best bang for your buck  Toyota,Lc engineering,Comp Cams etc...     Any input will be awesome

lc, www.engnbldr.com both have good cams welcome to the site, do a search on it, its all been covered before... a cam will really liven up the 22r

at first  i ran some dual springs  but  they didnt  work the way i liked,  they also let me rev  too high,  so  i have  regular  toyota  springs now

yes  but ONLY enough to smooth it out

NEVER  take more than is needed  to smooth it out off  a head  your gonna drive on the street,  pump gas  wont like it

really, well I've heard one most power robbing down fall of a 22R is the flow of the head so hopefully port/polishing it will make a big diff!

yeah he's right about it not being a good idea to bump the compression to much.. i got a little carried away with shaving my 20r head and 22r block and it pinged like crazy until i fattened up the mixture.  i wonder if some cams well bring the compression down a bit? if i remember right, some of the comp cams recommended 9 to 1 compression ratio.

i dont believe that the cam has anything to do with the compression ratio does it?? when you shave the head and deck the block you increase compression because there are less cc's in the combustion chamber, thus increasing the ratio, cams just give you more/less lift and more/less duration depending on the application..... 9 to 1 is a healthy ratio for 22r's.... if you run propane on them you have to up the ration to at least 10 to 1!!!

A cam with lots of duration and overlap will reduce detonation because you end up with less cylinder pressure at low rpm.
9.0 to 1 10.0 to 1 etc is the static compression ratio. High cylinder pressure is what causes pinging.
If you installed a cam big enough to reduce the low rpm cyl. pressure you would most likely be unhappy with the idle and low rpm performance.
