With IFS (don't know about straight axles) there are metal (covered by plastic when new, but the plastic wears out) stops on the lower A-arms to prevent the steering knuckle from turning to far.

At full lock, they will rub and give you the metal on metal noise as the suspension moves slightly up and down..........

solid axles also have steering stops and they clunk when maxed turning is reached

i had a problem simular to this only it was like metal on metal turning sort of like a lathe turning slowly or a drill. it turned out to be that i had forgotten to put the anti rattle clip in my brake pads. the pins had worked themselves out and the wheel would scrape against them. could be trunion bearings or wheel bearings if it's a solid axle.
lets not and say we did.

I don't know how to put a pic up of the noise? Jk I am currently running a stock 89 4runner with ifs....I am guessing it is the plastic stops worn off. You guys are freaking genius and quick too.  I will post up some pics of my ride soon enough

Don't waste your money on new plastic caps they'll just fall off again just brush some anti-seize on the stops.  It lubes them up and last longer than grease.  When I had IFS I re-applied every 6-7 months, no biggie.
