Throwout bearing noise after new clutch install? Help
« on: Dec 26, 2007, 10:08:35 PM »
Finished my clutch install on my '00 4runner tonight.  Fired it up for the first time to test it out and it made a strange noise when the clutch pedal was pressed.

Its a high pitch whine that only happens when the clutch pedal is pressed.  Sounds like its spinning up.

It seems to operate normally.  I drove it around the block went through 1-2-3.  Seens fine.  Just this noise that I have never heard before.

All parts are new.  Clutch, pilot, throwout, flywheel resurfaced.  Even the hydraulics are new.

Any ideas.

Thanks.

Maybe not enough.  Can I get to it through the shift fork hole?

Well if you think thats what it is.  What are my options short of yanking the trans?

I was looking at the FSM for my '87 and it looks like you put a light coat on there.  But I don't see how that little bit of grease would do anything for very long.  Guys run clutches for 100k and a small smear of grease and it never squeaks?   :dunno:

I don't think I'd chance it.  All you need is to have your clutch/flywheel coated with lube  :ack:

Well its too late to do anything more tonight.  I'll look at it in the morning.

I called the guys at Marlin and they told me in so many words not to worry about it.  The sound is the bearing spinning, which is a sealed unit.  And since it is performing normally it should not be a problem for as long as the clutch will last.

And the grease is for the movement of the bearing on the imput.  So grease may not even get rid of that noise.  So I'll leave it be for now.

Thanks for all the replies.

when the clutch is pressed? that is a pilot issue, not a throwout issue

:psss:    Both bearings spin with the clutch pedal depressed.

With the clutch pedal down the input shaft stops spinning as soon as you make a shift and the throwout bearing spins as long as it's against the clutch cover with your foot on the pedal (even slightly).

Because it shouldn't be spinning with the pedal released.
