I am starting this thread to document my build of my 84 toyota pick up I have named TuRD.
I am a recovering jeeper, I have a 94 YJ that I built it is very capable, 38inch tires, all the goodies, took me about 2 years to build.
I bought the toyota to drive back and forth to work  to save on gas and lesten the wear on my 38tsl's on my jeep.
I have 300.00 in my TuRD.
The reason I decided to build the TuRD is my Jeep was down with a steering issue and I drove the TuRD on a ride with my off road club and was laughed at the whole ride, I got stuck allot and was pulled out allot by Jeeps. So I thought this is a fun little truck and it would be fun to make it more capable with out spending a  :moon: load of money on it like I did my Jeep.

This is the TuRD in all her glory
84 with a 22R carb
31inch street tires
some kind of extended shackles on rear

This is going to be a mild rig in comparison to others on here, I am not trying to build an extreme rig,

some mods she is going to get
Lincoln Locker rear, Aussie locker front, 4.88 gears
4.7 gears in X-Fer Case
rears on front
hi steer
2 inch lift in rear
33X12.50-15 cooper ssts
Build sliders
redo the flat bed, build front bumper, add winch.

I am in the Army and stationed in Fairbanks,Alaska so junkyard parts are hard to come by and shipping is murder so this is going to be a  :turtle3: build.

I could not stand it I had to through a pic of the jeep in

Faibanks is a pretty good ways up there and pobably quite chilly by now too!  :ack:  I couldn't take the daylight schedule right now either. That would drive me nuts... :willynilly:. Cool rig though!  :beerchug:  There's just something about a flatbed that always looks cool.

Well this weekend, I dissambled the rear axle and welded up the spider gears, the ring and pinion looked like brand new and had no slop.

I stumbled across the deal of the century on 33inch Goodyear MTRS, FREE! Well the story goes I went to Walmart to get a quart of Oil and seen a stack of MTRS and a sign that said sale. I had no intintion of buying them but went and asked how much, the lady said 50.00each  :yikes: I was like are you sure? these tires? she was like yeah someone ordered 8 of them and never picked them up they have been sitting in the back for a year and the manager wants them gone.... I ran out of the store like my ass was on fire and drove home as fast as I could and got my truck and went back and bought all 8 of them, I got eight 33 12.50-15 goodyear MTRs for $420.00 I put 4 of them up on my clubs website for $450.00 and sold them in less than an hour, So I got brand new tires for FREE!!

Now I gotta figure out how to lift my truck in the front enough to get them under there. Any suggestions on how to make 33's fit on the cheap that dont include a hammer, sawzall, cut off wheel, or plasma cutter?

Duffil

I had 33s on mine without a lift or anything.  It does rub a bit though.

I have gatered up some leafsprings from a yj and a waggy, going to see what kind of b*std pack I can build for the front of the TURD!

Angler

Bought a brand new muffler from schmucks for $18.00 gonna install it tomorrow, I picked up a set of waggy springs from jackrabbit today and pulled the yota in the garage and started pulling the front end apart to build new spring packs to fit the 33inch tires, some observations These trucks flex surprisingly well once you take off the silly little sway bar, I am going to have to make some quick discos, the shocks are shot, going to wait to replace them because I am going to build some shock hoops and run long travle shocks, I really need to rebuild the steering knuckles and re pack the birfeilds, this will come sooner than later, this little truck marks its territory with coolant and oil. gonna investigate where she is bleeding from tomorrow

:yesnod:

Angler

I got the front springs off today, what a PITA the springs have not been off since new and were all rusted up, I could not get the front bolts out so I had to use a cut off wheel and whack the bolt head's off. the stock spring mounts are very flimsy so i am going to beef them up before I re install the spring packs, also going to use a different bolt set up getting rid of the stock junk. I picked up 4 15X10 rims today from a friend for 10 dollars ea. going to take the 33's to the auto craft shop tomorrow and mount them up.

I got the waggy springs installed today, things I had to modify, had to modify the shackles to accept thee 9/16 through bolt, had to modify the front spring hanger to accept the 9/16 through bolt, had to re rout brake lines, had to do away with sway bar, had to extend traction bar thing, I have the push pull steering still and the steering arm was hitting the u bolt so i had to flip it o get it outta the way, it will work till I can get a high steer set up, I am in the hunt for a IFS steering box right now.  the shocks were way to short so i robbed the ones off of my Jeep till I can order new ones for the Yoda. before the rear sat about 2 inches higher than the front now the front sits about 1 inch higher than the rear. I am going to leave it alone eventually I am going to go with Chevy springs in the rear so it should level it out. I still have less than 500.00 in the whole truck, I am going to go mount the 33inch tires tomorrow and throw them on then I will snap a couple pics.

things to get
longer brakelines
shock hoops, shocks
Rebuild front knuckles
histeer/ifs box/ PSpump
aussie locker for front
build better flat bed
build front winch bumper
build rock sliders
rattle can paint job
4.7 tcase gears

Sounds like a solid plan. Make sure when you get highsteer and the ifs box that you plate the front frame, also a good idea with the shock hoops. marlin sells a pretty cheap ifs box frame kit that makes things really easy. when i did my high steer i installed the marlin kit, then cut cardboard cut outs of my frame from the MC kit back and cut some out of 1/2" steel and welded it to the frame. just dont cover up your vin numbers. look foreward to seeing how the turd turns out :D

Sorry for the dark picture it was 1:00pm here in alaska and the sun was almost down

I hate it to but thats where the Army sent me, after I get back from Iraq I will be getting stationed in Ft. Irwin, which is like 45 min. from Barstow,CA  Cant wait!!

Angler

I am am in the process of building a drop hanger, so I can move the front axle 2 inches forward, also scored some Rubicon express long travel shocks for a Jeep TJ with a 5.5 inch lift for next to nothing, I will have pictures tonight, after I get the axle where I want it I will measure for brake lines and have them made up at the local hose maker.

NorCalToy

good looking truck  great score on tires, they look good on the truck. not likin Alaksa though?

I got the spring hanger built and installed, I used 2x4 .25 wall tube and .25inch plate to make the brackets and gussetts. Moving the axle foward 2 inchs really made a big difference in the clearence dept, it raised the truck another inch in the front.

Me cleaning off the factory brackets

now I can get my brake lines made and fab up some shock hoops.
