Paint CAD the BEASTMASTER!
« on: Nov 01, 2007, 07:20:10 PM »
I was out in the parking lot earlier today thinking about the Beast and givin her the ole evil eye.  Started thinking it would be interesting to drop some weight off it and have a chance to clean up some of the frame rust underneath.  What if I was to take that big honkin wrecker bed to the scrap yard and build her a nice svelt flatbed at maybe a quarter of the weight?

I am thinking this might be a good project for the coming spring when I get done with the big truck project I am in the middle of.

Then I realized the best way to decide would be to let the artists around here do their worst.  So here is a nice side shot...PAINT HER UP!

Thank you!

got the custom job from paint here. paint it viper red  , then black out all the windows, then for the custom look run some tuner underglow.

Why not ditch that bed and fab up a pickup bed?  It'd be a bit of bodywork but might look kinda cool!

That is what the whole post is about.  Ditching the wrecker bed and fabbing up a smaller, lighter flatbed/box type bed.  You people obviously missed where I needed help painting a new bed onto the picture for design ideas...not painting the truck a new color.

Maybe it's just me...but, do you think the confusion might have started with the subject line of the thread?

since i cant find the paint feature (i'm on a mac right now) i would just make a flat bed out of 1/4" and place the toolbox up there behind the cab. much lighter. run a trim piece around the edge of the bed that sticks up 2" (like angle iron).

The Beastmaster...try and keep up.  It did, after all, make the trip from KS to MCR this year.

That is cool, but the idea is to make it a bit smaller and drop some weight off it.  I think you added 300#.

How much does the current bed weight vs what you would build? Could you just replace the floor of the bed with expanded metal (especially if the floor is heavy diamond plate steel)?

How about ditching the 5th wheel? Or finding a regular truck bed and making it work? You need two fender sections obliviously.

Get rid of the tag axle and put a dually axle back in between where the two were.

Then put a dually truck bed on there with a crome roll bar and some KC lights facing in all directions.

I saw one like that Mark, it looks really nice, but that is a little more work than I want to sink into the Beast.
I was hoping just to trim down to a lighter bed.

For those asking what the bed weighs, it is 1/4 inch diamond plate for the deck and ALL the rest is 3/16 plate.  The bed alone without the 5th wheel hitch has to weight 5-600#   It is REALLY beefy.

The beastmaster is very badass. It is probably the coolest tow rig I have seen in a while. Why not find a bed with matching body lines (I am assuming that a ford pickup box of the same vintage would have similar body lines) and make it fit? I think it would look pretty sweet, kind of like a suburban with the back window area cut off, and two axles, and a ford...ok maybe it wouldn't look like a suburban at all. (this thing is so unique) Then throw on a rollbar and maybe some lights and call it good. I also think the beast looks awesome the way it is painted now. Maybe get the rims lookin "bling bling" (I think you already did this?) and buff/wax the paint. Then it will be ready to tackle anything! :woohoo:
