Leaking Axles when steering arms removed... normal?
« on: Oct 04, 2007, 09:23:46 AM »
I am slowly working on installing my high steer on my 85 4runner.  When I removed the steering arms on the tops of each knuckle it seems as if the weight shifted and most of the oil from the axle began to leak out from end of the axle (around the knuckle).  Probably at least a quarts worth.

Is this normal, or did I somehow blow my inner axle seals and they need to be replaced?

Yep id say that would be normal. when you removed the steering arm it put weight on the axleshaft thus putting weight on the inner axle seal.. which is not known for holding worth anything.  so you probably need to replace them

Are your tires on the ground or is the front jacked up?

It is on a jack.

So...  should I replace the seals or not?

I would replace them with Marlin's new HD Front Axle Seals.

I just ordered a full rebuild kit off Marlin...  I have a geared 5.29 3rd that I need to swap in, so I will have to pull the axles anyways, might as well rebuild it while I'm there.
