What does it take to push 44s with a 22r?
« on: Sep 07, 2007, 03:00:15 PM »
I am pretty much starting from scratch on this build up and money is very tight, but I have a set of 1-tons (4:10s for now) and some 44" boggers. Instead of spending the time and money building the toyota axles I would like to slap my 44s under there. My question is how bad is my truck going to hate the 44s if I leave the 22r and either double or triple case it?

thats why I am thinking triple cases and not regearing, the 14bolt will only go to 5:38 and I may switch to 2.5 tons down the road

Are you planning on DD'n this truck?   it's not going to be very fun.. trust me..

on the trail?  its all about gear reduction dude, you don't need a big HP motor to make it up a verticle rock.. just keepin that TQ to the tires and making 'em stick.

Btw i'm running 42's and a bone stock 22R... it works perfectly fine on the trail... other than the CARB on steep inline's.

This is of course a trail rig only that see's a top speed of maybe 20mph. I'd imagine if it was stable enough for street driving I could get it up to around 60-65 mph in 4th.

It wasn't real clear - what 1 ton axles do you have? D44's aren't any stronger than Toyota axles, but the width is probably necessary to fit the tires with a reasonable height.

I would suggest keeping the 4.10's in it and drive around in 2.28:1 low range (giving you an effective gearing of 9.35), should do OK on the road if you have to.

A 3RZ powered rig pushing the 22R rig

My question is how bad is my truck going to hate the 44s if I leave the 22r and either double or triple case it?

What are you plans with the use of your rig? Is it your daily driver, or (as it seems to me) are you only curious regarding the strength of the Toyota axles?

this is just a toy, no street time at all. I just don't want to invest a lot in the toyota axles, mostly because I have the 1-tons setting in the shop. My main concern is just the drivablity of the truck off-road. All I have had were K-5s with 1-tons and big blocks, but I want something more capable in the rocks. I have been considering a 4.3 with a SM465 and 208 to get a decent crawl ratio, but I don't want to spend the money if the 22r and dual cases will work.

iffn you can match the rockwell gear ratio(6 whatever or 7 whatever) than with the tires all you need are

axle strength
gear ratio(if you can get the axles low enough)
stock duals

this is the setup my non computer buddy uses, with out a hich(sp).

i run dual toy's on a 22re with 38.5sx's and my bud's crawl(side to side crawl) ratio seems to be the same.
his setup is unstopable compared to the guys in our club that run   'cough' dana axles with 42's. now i don't run dana axles(diamond here) but he get's it without the dumbass breakedges.

unless you are worried about your tow rig not doing it's job, i'd say rocks.

i'll try to get my bud (club member) to post up but he used to be a heep guy :stopit:

won't any axles lower than 5.29 get mauled, tripped, then raped by those tires, crawlin?

I hear the 5.86 hold up pretty good in D60s and D70s. I had thought about 7:17s but I am worried about the pinion.
