I just bought a 1985 toyota camry four door hatchback automatic for $450, to replace my 85 4runner that i rolled.

ONE BIG PROBLEM!!!! i cannot turn the key in the ignition. i started it 4 times the day i bought it, after minor jiggling, but now nothing. it has been sitting for 3 days. it runs great i just cant start it.

i dont want to pay a locksmith for a key(cause they would have to be mobile an it would have to solve problem) or mechanic plus towtruck fees.

i would like to bypass everything an make it pushbutton, under the hood, or at the steering colum. that it, i dont care about security i just need it to run, cause im in the boonies an u need a car or truck out here.

please help

Just break out the old keyed part and use a flat head screwdriver to turn the actual plastic switch, I had to do that once for a while. The trick is to do it with out causing alot of damage to the column

You need to remove the keyed assembly to unlock the wheel before you can use any kind of pushbutton feature

i did it, i can start it an i just took off the wheel lock, damn it is so easy once you know how to do it. No wonder toyota trucks are always getting stolen. now that i can turn my car on an off i can check out those remote starts or the push button ones

I was going to say there should be a key number on one of the door locks or somewhere that you could have Toyota cut you a new key.

You could just buy a new lock set too. May cost as much as the locksmith, but you will have all new locks and keys.

But to remove the lock without damaging anything, you have to turn the key either to the accessory or run position (to release the pin that secures it). But, they are easy to replace, if you can do that.
It ain't worth doin' if you don't have to clean up afterwards!

Build it, break it, fix it, repeat until your wallet is empty.
