check your timing.  I'd bet it's advanced like 18-20 degrees.  Back it off, but you'll lose power in doing so.

My 89 SAS 4Runner with 4.88 gears, 35 inch tires and a 22RE is getting about 18 MPG for all driving.  My dad's 98 4Runner with the 3.4L is getting about 19 mpg.

you checked air filter, fuel filter, all that good stuff?  How fast do you drive to get 12 (or does it even matter)?  I have a pro-stroker 22re that gets 19.5 @ 65-70 (that is with 4" of lift, 35X13.5 tires, dual cases, ARB bumber, rock sliders, camper shell when it is on, and 5.29 gears...just accounting for extra weight)...is the 12 just off-road or on the highway?  Anything else going wrong?  I mean do you have the same power that you used too (taking into account you have had the truck for a while)?  List all and any symptoms that it might have and maybe we could help you a little more.  IF you have an extra set of tires (smaller than 33), try and put em' on and then figure your mileage.  Also, I know it is kinda elementary, but are you accounting for a larger size tire compared to what came stock on the truck?  Even if your odometer says you have gone 100 miles, you may have actually gone more with a 33.  I know on my tow rig it changed (It came with 265's and I put 285's and at 66-67mph I am actually going 70-71).  So actually, if my trip says 100, I know I have gone more, but I just try and take an average with what type of driving I have been doing.  Just my  :twocents:  IMHO you have something wrong.  There is a runner on the forum with everything I have and 35's (and 3.0), and he says he usually gets around 15+mpg on the highway http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=35120.0 ...I would think you should get the same or better (although he does have 5.29's).  Just tryin' to help.

change your fuel filter...if it is anything like a 22re it is a PITA to get too, but it would probably really help (especially if you don't know how many miles are on it).  I changed the filter on a 97 Tahoe and...believe it or not...it went up 2 mpg on the highway.  Also, pull a few of your plugs and see if they are running real rich or not.   :dunno:

U think the fuel filter would make that big of a difference? there is a pre filter in the tank too so i would think the fuel going thru the line filter would be pretty clean

you never know.  If there is 150K on the truck, and he has never changed the filter, who is to say the person('s) before him ever changed it either?  I know on that Tahoe I was talkin about, the filter wasn't changed until about 130K (it was my mom's truck).

I have a question....Not to highjack or anything....But if you are running bigger tires, Your speedometer is off correct? Depending on tires size. So technically that would make your odometer be off also. So in essence if you are calculating your MPG using your odometer you could add a little bit to your MPG because you are driving further then it says seeing as it is off a little bit. Or am  off my rocker and it doesn't make that much of a difference?

No, it makes a difference...but it depends on how big of a tire you went from stock.  My tow rig is about 4mph off (at about 70)...so when I go to fill up I count how many hours I have driven...mutlipy that by about how many mph I am off...and then do the calculatioin to find gas mileage.  So, if I have driven 5 hours on the highway with my tow rig and the trip said 500 miles, I would add in about 20 miles.  It really starts to add up the bigger tire you go.  I tested my tow rig by having a buddy follow me in a stock truck.  But if you went from a 31 to a 35 without changing your gears, the mileage may be pretty far off.  To most it doesn't matter, but with me and my small wallet, gas prices and mileage are a big deal and I would like to be as accurate as I can be (even if it is rough).  If I am correct, it is exponential, the faster you go, the more it will be off.   Ok, I am done hijacking...sorry.

They key is to figure out the percentage that you are off and then time doesn't matter.  Mine has 4.88 gears with 35's so the final ratio is close enough to stock that I don't bother correcting.

The 94 4runner family rig has 31 inch tires, 5 speed tranny and 4.30 gearing, it also has the 3.0 v6 and gets an average of 18 mpg on regular gas. my wife drives it during the week and i drive it on weekends. it never goes over 65mph.. it's all stock but it feels a lot heaver that my truck. at 60mph it's turnning above 3000rpms in 4th. around 2600 in 5th.  what rpm's are you turnning with 33's?

with big tires you are going farther and faster than your speedo reads. 4.88 should bring things back to normal.

Well I think I have a 14 gallon tank, i havnt filled it completely in a while but if i do indeed have a 14 gallon tank (i think all the 1st gen 4runners had 14 gallons but im not sure about that) then I get about 17 MPG (street and highway). If i do 90% freeway I get about 20-22. Better than I thought i was getting, since it only seems like I can go about 250-280 miles per tank. I have 35s and 5.29s.
