EXTRACTING AND ERASING FAULT CODES

When the SCAN tool has been correctly connected and powered up, the first menu that will be displayed will look like the following list:
1) VEHICLES TESTED
2) HOW TO USE
3) CONFIGURE
4) SELECT SYSTEM

Select menu option 4) SELECT SYSTEM by pressing the numeric key #4.
After you have selected 4) SELECT SYSTEM, a menu will be displayed that will look like the following list:
1) ENGINE
2) TRANSMISSION
3) BODY
4) SUSPENSION
5) ABS
6) PASSIVE REST
7) THEFT ALARM

Select menu option 1) ENGINE by pressing the numeric key #1.
After this option has been selected, the SCAN tool will display the vehicle engine displacement, emission control systems, transmission or transaxle type, and the engine controller part number.
Compare all of the information from step 5 to the equipment on the vehicle to verify that they both coincide.
A sub-menu will appear asking if the vehicle is equipped with A/C or not. Enter the appropriate data. NOTE: If a vehicle without A/C is entered to have A/C, some fault messages associated with A/C could be generated. If a vehicle with A/C is entered as without A/C, certain fault codes, and displays would be locked out from the SCAN tool user and would not be displayed.
After the air conditioning screen, a menu of engine sub-systems will be displayed. The menu looks like this:
1) FUEL/IGNITION
2) CHARGING
3) SPEED CONTROL

Select menu option 1) FUEL/IGNITION by pressing numeric key #1.
After you select 1) FUEL/IGNITION a menu will be displayed that looks like this:
1) SYSTEM TEST
2) READ FAULTS
3) STATE DISPLAY
4) ACTUATOR TEST
5) ADJUSTMENTS

Select menu option 2) READ FAULTS by pressing numeric key #2.
This selection will test all of the circuits, actuators, solenoids, and systems. After it performs all of the tests, it determines if there are any faults for any of the systems and reveals them as fault codes or messages. If no faults or messages were found, the message "Vehicle Passes Electrical Test" will appear on the screen.
Press the ATM key after the completion of extracting fault codes, and you will see the same menu as shown in step 10.
Select menu option 5) ADJUSTMENTS by pressing numeric key #5. This selection is used to erase fault codes after they have been extracted and repaired.
The following menu will appear after 5) ADJUSTMENTS has been selected:
1) ERASE FAULT
2) RESET MEMORY
3) EMR MEMORY CHECK

Select menu option 1) ERASE FAULTS by pressing numeric key #1.
When this option is selected another screen will appear asking "Are you sure?". If you want to erase all fault codes press the ENTER key. If you made a mistake and do not want to erase the fault codes, press the ATM key and the same menu as in step 15 will appear.
When all of the steps are completed, press the ATM key until you get back to the main menu and shut the SCAN tool off. Disconnect the SCAN tool from the vehicle and reconnect any disconnected co

The Primary Winding resistance should be 1.13 - 1.23 ohms at 24°C (75°F). If the coil temperature is above 93°C (200°F), then 1.50 ohms is acceptable.

The Secondary Winding resistance should be 7700-9300 ohms at 24°C (75°F). A maximum of 12,000 ohms is acceptable is the coil temperature is 93°C (200°F), then 1.50 ohms or more.

Before startingTEST 1 check the following.

Verify proper Fuel Delivery (Fuel System).
Verify engine is functioning properly i.e.. compression test, rotor rotation and timing belt or chain routing.
Move all primary wires, connectors and battery cables by pushing, pulling and twisting by hand. If any bad connectors or corroded connections are found, make necessary repairs to wire or connector.
Disconnect secondary wire from ignition coil. Inspect the coil, distributor cap, rotor and ignition wires for cracks or carbon tracking. Replace components as needed. Check vehicle's maintenance schedule to ensure spark plugs and wires have been properly maintained.
START TESTING with TEST 1 - CHECKING FIRING ORDER this will indicate proper testing sequence. The following is a description of the testing procedures.
TEST 1 - CHECKING FIRING ORDER
TEST 2 - SPARK TEST AT PLUGS
TEST 3 - SECONDARY DISPLAYS
TEST 4 - SPARK FROM COIL
TEST 5 - DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLY
TEST 6 - SPARK PLUG WIRE RESISTANCE
TEST 7 - VOLTAGE AT IGNITION COIL
TEST 8 - IGNITION COIL RESISTANCE
TEST 9 - SPARK PLUG CHECK
TEST 10 - IGNITION CONTROL MODULE
TEST 11 - CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
TEST 12 - SYNC PULSE GENERATOR

 Engine Speed Sensor

Disconnect the engine speed sensor electrical connector from the wiring harness. Check the resistance of the sensor by placing an ohmeter across terminals A and B (marked on sensor connector). With the engine at normal operating temperature, the ohmeter should read 200 ±75 ohms. Replace sensor if ohmeter readings are not within specifications.

SYNC PULSE (STATOR) TEST

NOTE:  An analog voltmeter is required to perform this test. Don't disconnect the distributor electrical connector from the distributor. Insert the leads of the voltmeter into the back side of the distributor electrical connector to get to the terminals, but make sure that the connector is not damaged while doing so.

Connect the red (+) lead of the voltmeter to the blue wire in the back side of the distributor connector.
Connect the black (-) lead of the voltmeter to the gray (with tracer) wire in the back side of the distributor connector.
Set the voltmeter on the 15V D/C scale. Turn the ignition switch ON. The voltmeter should indicate a reading of approximately 5 volts.
If there is no voltage, ensure that the voltmeter leads have a good connection.
If there is still no voltage:
Remove ECU from the vehicle and check for voltage at pin C-16 with the ECU connector still connected. Put the red lead of the voltmeter in the back side of the ECU connector so that it has a good connection with pin C-16, and connect the black lead of the voltmeter to a good ground. The voltmeter should indicate a voltage of approximately 7 volts.
If there is still no voltage:
Perform a vehicle test using a DRB II or equivalent scan tool.
If voltage is present:
Check for continuity from the blue wire of the distributor connector to pin C-16 of the ECU electrical connector. If there is no continuity, repair the harness as necessary.
Check for continuity from the gray wire (with tracer) of the distributor connector to pin C-5 of the ECU electrical connector. If there is no continuity, repair the harness as necessary.
Check for continuity from the black wire of the distributor connector to ground. If there is no continuity, repair the harness as necessary.
Disconnect the positive wire to the ignition coil. While observing the voltmeter, crank the engine. The voltmeter needle should fluctuate back and forth as the engine is being cranked. This verifies that the stator in the distributor is operating properly and a sync pulse (signal) is being generated.
If there is no sync pulse, replacement of the stator is necessary.
