Moving Steering Box - Front bolt vs front crossmember
« on: Jul 25, 2007, 09:20:54 AM »
I'm doing an SAS on an '86 4Runner using rears-up-front.  Since the front axle has moved fwd about 2" I need to relocate the steering box forward also, so the HySteer draglink clears the tie rod.
Since I'm moving it anyway, I figure I'll push it as far fwd as it can go - so if I later move the axle forward by another 1" by moving the spring pin holes, it won't be in the way.  (I probably will move that last 1", as right now my approach angle is "very good" and one more inch might make it "great".)
Anyway - With the body mount out of the way, it looks like the forward steering box bolt can go almost all the way to the front of the frame rail.   :flamer:

The question is: when the steering box is moved forward enough that it's front bolt is 'inside' the frontmost crossmember, how is the nut handled?  Is the crossmember "C" shaped that I can get inside it from behind?  (I'm at work and can't look at the truck, just trying to figure out tonight's tasks).

the front crossmember is a C channel, but it has a piece of plate welded to its inside essentially boxing it. there are several access holes on both sides of the crossmember.. i am not 100% sure about the backside, but here is a pic of my FUBARed cross member, the holes are big enough to get a nut inside
