Shifter came loose in my rear case!
« on: Jul 02, 2007, 10:14:13 PM »
I have dual cases in my V6 94 Runner. The shift lever in my rear case came loose and it will now spin and you can move it up and down. I had the GF spin it while I was under the truck and it's loose right where it comes out of the T-case. It's the shifter itself not the linkage or anything. Is that just some kind of adhesive on there or what? It appears it's two seperate pieces. It still shifts fine but I'm afraid it's going to come all the way apart and leave me stuck in 4.70 low someplace. I thought about just grabbing it with some vise grips and putting the big squeeze on it from under the truck but I don't want to bugger it all up if I don't have to. Any ideas????

This happened in my 4cyl t-case.  For me it was just the clip that holds down the shifter that failed.  It allowed me to pull up on the shifter, spin it 360, then put it back down.

Pull the boot off the shifter and take a look. I did this from inside the cab. I just had to install a new clip.

Thanks for the info but I don't think that is where it's loose. I put a red circle around the area where it is spinning at. It seems to be turning where the black and silver come togther.

Yup, I was first going to suggest the clip coming loose, and secondly :nervous: the shifter stub broke!

May I ask a question: Is this a short throw t/case shifter kit?

Oh wow, so you can still shift through the gears then?

Where did you get the shift handle from? Did you ever weld to it or dunk it in a cleaning chemical like carb cleaner for a prolonged time duration?

Thanks for the info Mike! I'm pretty sure the rubber melted when we welded it.

I had someone else who had already done dual cases in same year runner do my linkages for me. Live and learn I guess. It still shifts fine you can just spin the shifter around and pull it up about a half inch. Not much I can do without replacing the whole thing. I have bigger projects to work on then that. Thanks again for the help Mike.

I hope you don't run into too much trouble when you repair it. As I mentioned on the phone, we sell a t/case short throw kit that would help with your 2" body lift, and also not require as much of an off set to the shift handle.

I was gonna say, why not just drill all the way through, and run a bolt through it, but this works better
