I had it at work to install the transmission so I decided to play with it some.  there is no weight on the rear. It didnt want to move

I like the ford tank idea, how big is the tank?  this is the first time i have seen a ford tank used, i was planing on making mine out of thick alumand installing it between the frame rails by the cab.  the only problem i have is that is where i want my full size spair to go.  good Job and good luck.

That tank is from a early 90s F150. Its about 19gals and fits perfect in the area back there. I used the ford pump that came with that tank which I will replace later just for insurance of not breaking down. The only catch is the fuel sender is not really compatible with the toyota gauge. It reads backwards (Empty is full and full is empty) and not all the way up on the gauge. I think empty is about the 3/4 full mark. I looked into adapting the sender from the toy but it was really not going to work correcty. My plan is to just learn the guage for now then get an autometer fuel gauge that reads the correct ohms from the ford sender. I will probably end up doing a whole custom cluster with autometer guages in the future.

also depending on tire size you might be able to mount it right under the tank. I am going to run a 38 so its getting mounted right on top.

here is some finished pictures of the tank install. I used the factory straps from the same year F150 bought from LMCtruck.com for about 50bucks.




As far as updates go I have had it running and driving enough to go richard around on a local dirt lot with some hills. I was impressed with the gearing and everything seemed to work how it should. Its hard to tell only running around on 30" tires too! I have gotten my tires in which are 38x12.5R15 swamper sxs but still waiting on my allied beadlocks to show up. I buttoned up the hydro assist but I did find the engine to have an external head gasket leak and a front crank seal leaking bad enough to need to fix it before it gets driven. fixing the freeze plug and cleaning out the POs dumb ass stop leak must have made the other leaks show themselves. That and sitting for about 3 months not being started.

Stay tuned after this weekend for more updates, I plan to get some work done to the tube bed. get the spare mounted up. button up the fuel lines, rear brake line and pump wiring. Tool box mounted, little floor for extra space for ammo cans/fuel cans etc. ITs getting close but so far! I will also need to do some trimming to get the 38s to tuck, maybe even firewall tubbing......

so I yank the head to replace the gasket only to find some idiot hilicoiled the block! Its all dicked up and I dont think Its going to hold any type of proper torque on that bolt. I really just wanted to patch this thing up so i could go with the 2.7 swap but guess I will have to find another 22re and live with it.

got lucky and fixed it, figure it will hold out long enough to find a taco motor



guess crap like that is expected with a 200k engine. I grabbed the side cutters and snipped the excess coil and tapped it below the deck.  it started and ran with no leaks so Im crossing my fingers.

yeah I love the mess headgaskets make when taking it apart. i put some miles on it today with good success. I ran some decarb(seafoam) through it today to clean up the carbon. idles and runs much better. No leaks now so hopefully its good to go and I can get on with finishing the rest. Seems the decarb helped with the long crank time I was having too.

I have my 38 sxs in just waiting on the wheels. I also got the spare mounting taken care of.

no it is high Ive got some tweaking to do and if I cant get it low enough I will need differnt springs. Ive only got about 50miles on the suspension so nothing is settled. I run into the problem of clearing those 38s tho. currently I already need to hack some fender and possible firewall tub. once the sliders go on it will look better too

Its got some width with the wheels. pretty stable at least on the street

Yes it does lean. gott fix that. there are alot of odds and ends to tie up on this thing before its rock worthy.

the rollers are 30x9.5r15 I think. only a couple thousand miles on them.

Im am on the fence on selling or keeping.......

pictures make it look better than it is. I cleaned up the paint with a little steel wool then a good wax job. shined it back up and took all the surface rust off. Its got a few dents the worst being in the roof towards the rear. not horrible but there. Somewhere in its life it took a hit on the right front and that fender was replaced but it was a good repair. the worst is on the passager side where the PO looked like he took a can opener to it. They tryed welding it back up half assed. it was into the bed too pretty bad but since the bed was coming off it was no big deal. I may or may not fix it. Its a perfect rig for wheeling tho. Not too pretty not to want to scratch it but nice enough to to look like a box


The interior was kinda nasty but in good shape. just needs new flooring which I found a vinyl kit for it. The seats need to be cleaned real well to get that nasty old truck funk out. again good for wheeling.

one downfall to a ford tank is getting the factory gauge to work. some  just hook it up and deal which seems like the majority that do this swap. the ohms on the ford sender are backwards from toyota. ford is low resistance low fuel and high resistance is high fuel, Toyota is the other way around.(no you cant just reverse the wires!) Also the range spread is differnt between the two. So if I used the factory gauge it would read empty at 3/4 and full past E .Really wanting a gauge on my truck I was tempted to just hook it up and deal to read the goofy factory gauge then I got to thinking.



simple and cheap. 36bucks from summit and its set up for a ford sender. a little fab work with an alum plate and done.
