1991 22re problem
« on: Jun 13, 2007, 10:07:24 PM »
hey guys...
my girlfriend and I went to look at a 91 extra cab 4x4 pickup for sale.  its got 180k on it and runs and sounds nice. there is a little front end damage from a wreck from the previous owner.  nothing serious.

anyways, the 22re has a problem.  when it was running, the RPMs go up and down in a pattern of about 1 second.  it also idles high.  it will idle normal for about 1-2 seconds and then revs up and goes back to idle for about 1 or 2 seconds and does it again.  i can tell by hearing it run that its not a mechanical problem, it something with the EFI computer.  I could see dirt and some dried muddy water on the motor and air box, so i was thinking maybe he sucked a little bit of dirt in the MAF and dirtied up the little sensor inside.  Im pretty sure this would cause and irratic idle, as the computer would be getting screwey and false readings.  I dont have a ton of experience with EFI though.
When the throttle is pressed and when it is manually revved up, it still does the jumpy thing.  its not like its JUST idle.  If I had the truck for about 30 mins in my garage I could figure it out, but its not my truck and i cant take it to my garage.
other than this problem, the truck runs really really good.  it revs nicely and has a quite decent ammount of power.  its just choppy. I want to go check it out with a paper clip and read the ECU error codes.

any ideas???
thanks

Lower the idle speed.

I was raising the idle speed as high as possible for a smog test, and you hit a point where it starts doing that.

A bad vacuum line can also effect the idle, depending on the price it shouldn't be an issue to not buy it.

trust me, if i was the one buying the truck it would be in my driveway already.  hard one to pass up.  its for my girlfriend and its her first car and her dad is gonna be buying it.  he thinks its gonna be a ton of money to fix and hes gonna have to like rebuild the motor and replace a bunch of stuff (he knows like absolutely nothing about cars, let alone toyotas).  little does he know its most likely a small problem.  i wish i could look the motor over.  her dad is gonna take it to the local professional toyota mechanic Larry who is known as Yodaman.  im sure someone has heard of him.  he is gonna look it over and tell her dad what it needs to be in top running condition.  and he will probably pay for whatever it needs, because thats just the way he is.  oh well. less work for me.  ill have my girlfriend post pictures of it when we get it.   OF COURSE were going to go wheeling and im gonna teach her the ropes.  she has an account on here already  :outtahere:

thanks for the tips.  ill try my best to check these things next time i see the truck.  ive only seen it once, and heard it run.
