Anybody ever seen this Vehicle Retirement Program? (California)

A friend of mine in Auto Shop told me about this program through the DMV in California, that you could sell any registered driving vehicle for $1000. This program is for vehicles that wont pass smog. You know, gross polluters, like what most of us drive. Well Im gonna try it. Youve gotta write a letter to this place to meet the eligibility requirements, in which they'll send you back a letter in about 6 weeks telling you whether you meet the requirements. Then you take it to a dismantler they tell you to, and they will purchase the vehicle and crush it.

Now, my 1984 Dodge Ram 50 wont pass smog for nothin. And its only worth about $400. I thinks this program sounds like a good idea.

Speak for yourself, but 85 still runs as clean as it did new and yes I'm in CA.

BTW with a hint of sarcasm I bet this program is only for illegals.

I don't know if this applies to you, but I believe you have to be the registered owner of the vehicle for two years.  They don't want people buying a vehilce for a few hundred, and then turning around and scrapping it.  It has to be fully functional, and no more than 120 days out of registration (no vehicles sitting in fields)  Also, they don't have to give you 1K, they can give you the "value" of the car.

It's the states way of getting gross polluters off the road. If you vehicle fails smog, the station is suppose to give you a form to fill out & the state of CA will pay the first $500 of the repairs to get the vehicle to pass, you pay anything over $500.

I believe most of this is true except for the gross polluter part. I've owned my '78 Chevy for 17 years now and my '84 Toyota for 3 years and have received notices for both vehicles asking to voluntarily surrender my vehicles for destruction in trade for money  . Usually the amount is 500 bucks  . So far neither of my vehicles have been gross polluters or out of registration at anytime. Not to mention, they pass a smog inspection with substantially good results which surprises the smog tech guys almost everytime  . It's just based on vehicle demographics such as age and average pass or fail status of vehicles like these. It would have to be a lot more money than that for me to give them my old rigs     .

shoot  where I live in Cali I dont have to smog at all, unless I buy a vehicle and even then its only once    my 78 Camero we havent ever smoged  or the Blazer or the ...... well you get the point

Don't do it, big corporations get smog credits for them.
