newb dual case driveline q
« on: Apr 29, 2007, 05:29:31 PM »
truck is 85 4runner chevy rear springs 108" wb.  i'm about to put in my dual cases, and i picked up an 84 cv shaft.  i was planning to tip my pinion up and get the cv shaft beefed up and lengthened.  but... i was just talkin to a guy whos running duals with a 108" wb and he says he's using a stock short box shaft.  could i be ok just leaving the pinion angle and running a stocker short box shaft?  basically do i have to tip my pinion and use a cv or??

any input??

thanks!!!

I don't have a CV, my pinion angle aint too bad, and no vibes.  If you are at 108" you should be good with a stock shaft.  I am at like 112/113 using a stock single cab/shortbed shaft but I only have about and inch of engagement at ride height. :shocking:

I tipped my pinion up and used a CV on the rear driveshaft.  I've only ran it to 60mph (tires shake too much after that ) but it's good up to 60 so far.

hmm, here's another question.  since i'm going to need work done on either the cv front, or shortening my stock rear shaft... would i be better off using the cv and having it lenghtened??  or should i just get the rear shaft shortened?  considering i'm not going to tip the pinion... my guess is i should use the stock shaft...but thinking i might tip the pinion in the future.. i dont wanna have expensive work done to 2 driveshafts if i can avoid it....

thanks!!

build a square shaft in the front and shorten the rear. if ya got hubs the square one will never spin unless its in 4wd. if you use 4hi a lot than i wouldnt recomend it. mine doesnt start to shake untill i hit about 30 which is way past the 4low limit.

ya i aleady have a square fornt, but since i have a spare cv front i was pondering using that just in case i do tip the pinion sometime in the future.  i'll prolly just get the rear shortened

it migh not help.  but if you install dualcases and then flip the rear springs around then you can run the stock driveline with no mods!  but you already have chevies so i guess it doesn't matter.
