The shock boots to exactly what there ment to prevent, if the allow dirt or water or sand in the boot it will rust, and wear out the seals on the shocks, if you don't have them it allow the dirt and what not to escape eliminating the problem.

OK I will take your word for it here,
Yes, the shock boots will come off......

TurtleTappers91

Should I use these All Pro shackles on the front? They look bling but are they strong enough? They are aluminum.....

DTB

are they different size? what is wrong with the ones that are on there?

There are aluminum 4 sure. They are very lite.
Thats why I wonder about strenghth....
Not sure if A.P. is still making them?

Gittinit

My friend has those same shackles on his runner and although I doubted them at first, they are definately strong enough. I would be shure to keep them greased and if possible use a washer at each side of the bolts.

OK ,The shock boots are in the trash... I still had a little time to fool around today
Found something interesting too, some damage from bottoming out? :(

DTB

looks like u need bumpstops...or mount the shocks higher....how much tube shows on the shock at full compression?

DTB

u need a ubolt flip...and then mount the shocks at an angle on top of the axle tube..u will probably have to fab an upper shock mount tube...those shocks are too long to be mounted like that

DTB i think thats his front shocks?  :headscratch: Bumpstops would solve that problem with some bumpstop extensions

I think this may be past damage ? I more recently welded peices of 2x2 square stock to the tops of the u bolt plates, and I now have 3" between the bumpstops and their landing pads. I had 5 " before...
As for the rear, The chevy swap is next. My brother beat me to starting on it....

TurtleTappers91

His bumper, a work in progress...

TurtleTappers91

His high angle driveshaft is finally here, its a 4wd again! 8)
My driveshaft is from high angle too.
Check the difference in clearance between the low and high pinion.....
Now I need one for the rear with a CV... :wiggle:

Now that you mention that, I looked under there a while ago after an offroad trip and my brake hard line was all bent and mangeled. I couldn't figure out how it happened. I think you just told me...
I don't know what to do about those huge brake lines, when the axle is not at full droop, those lines are so long. They want to rub on tires and springs and get caught up on stuff..

TurtleTappers91

Well hot rats, his chevy spring swap is already done!!!!

TurtleTappers91

By the way, notice the heavy equipment in the background on pic # 3?
Yep, this spot will be flattened tomarrow....
where will I go to test suspension stuff now? I'll have to drive miles. rats!

I Decided to set up my shocks as the first step in my chevy spring install.  It took me over half the weekend. I could not locate replacement bushings for the 'steins, so I used the 3/4" bushings that were on there, because I had the shocks adapted to fit the stock mounts. I used 3/4" bolts for the shocks, overkill but I like that....
The lower shock mounts are from 3/8", again, over beef. The upper crossmember is a 2" receiver hitch cut apart and made to suit my needs. 3/4" bolts are welded into that, too. I welded it on top of the frame, taking advantage of my 2" body lift.
I am happy with this, It looks BEEF.
I may still add gussets to the upper shock crossmember, because it is just welded to the top of the frame right now....and I think I could use a little longer shocks now.

TurtleTappers91

Heres some pictures with the shocks installed....

TurtleTappers91

63" chevy springs, U-bolt flip, long brake line, and double shackles are next. The idea is to get as much travel as I can out of a leaf spring suspension, while maintaining acceptable road handling. Its a big plus If I can improve the ride quality. I have to stew on all my Ideas all week long while I work, and on the weekends I put them into action, but I also have to drive the thing every week day.  so my progress is slow, and I try to do everything in steps or stages...
This is turning out pretty cool and I will definately take my camera on my next wheeling expedition to capture some of the action. I am going to have to stop working on it long enough to go play a little...

It's my new welder. a hobart 140. I already love it. It is a dream to use, after using that little chicago on stuff for a year. I even did some testing on my truck after work today...
should have it right soon... :flamer:

inmyownsummerami

those Hobarts are good welders for the price. They are Millers low cost line I believe.

TurtleTappers91

Yeah its a lower budget Miller, Pretty much. Cost $450 from Northern. It took me a long time to decide on this one, but I'v NEVER heard a bad word spoken about the Hobart 140. Heard like 100 positive comments, though.
I'm pretty sure I made the right choice here, time will tell...

rednk1980

I built my entire truck with that exact same welder and even welded my diffs with it! It hasn't ever failed me, By the way the truck is looking sick!  :beerchug:

I do all the work on my truck with that same welder and I love it,  I also did the work on my grandpas tractor with it, and they have been using it for concrete removal and never had any thing even resemble weakness.  Its an awesome welder,  I love how mobile it is too.

I got to do some more welding with the hobart today, and I like the results. :yesnod: I put on the front spring hangers for the rear springs, 10 inches or so forward from the stock location. I made my first attempt at some rosette welds (I think thats what they are called?) on the pass. side, because I am too, umm, lazy? to remove the gas tank and all that.... :smack:
I think it will be fine, someone please speak up if you know something I don't!!!!
