Buggy leaf question????
« on: Apr 17, 2007, 06:19:09 PM »
Does anyone run a buggy leaf in conjunction with the rear spring hanger and use a quik diconnect and connect for on trail use only. I am wanting to run a buggy leaf but I dont want to run it all the time. I drive it to the trails on the highway and if possible would like to keep the rear spring hanger and have the option to swap over to the buggy leaf once I get to the trail. Do any of you guys have any ideas on how I can do this and still have it safe on the highway and have any pictures to show me please. Any and all help is needed please.

All you have to do is restrict the buggy leaf from coming down.  I've seen this issue solved by welding some metal plate to either side of the frame, and running a bolt through, to trap the leaf against the frame.  Then, when you get to the trail, you just pull the bolt out and you're good to go

I remember seeing that somewhere on here on a build up but cant remember where. Now for another question, any suggestions on the type of spring to use? Stock toy spring or go with something different?

If I was going to do this mod, I would want a thicker leaf. It gets alot of twist and torque when flexing. I'd probably go with a chevy or ford leaf.

Just get a square U-bolt and use that at the spring eye of the buggy leaf to secure it to the frame when you don't want to use it.

Won't the eye have a shackle bolt in it?

Seems like a pain to swap back and forth. I like Blackdogs idea.

You put the u-bolt on the leaf, not through the eye.

I've also seen people use hitch pins instead of bolts, even easier to remove.

Depending on what kind of wheeling you are doing, but I would recommend staying away from the buggy leaf setup.  Several guys I wheel with tried it and ended up taking it back off because of axle wrap and hop.  I think a good set of lockers and some good springs would be fine.  If you are looking for a ramp champ, then go for it.
