buggy leaf?????
« on: Jul 17, 2004, 08:59:29 PM »
Hey guys im thinking about doing a buggy leaf setup in the rear of my 82 yota but ive heard good and bad things about these. :headscratch:
Anyone got any info or  2 :twocents: on this topic.
my rear axel is stock right now with toyota leaves in rear with a addleaf in them flexes allright but want more, it has 5.29's and is welded too if that has anything too do with it.
have heard that these make you have very bad axel wrap and thats one thing i dont want/need because i tend too have a heavy right foot at times :smack:.
If if i use a track bar or rap bar too the top of the axel will that help or maby use the 2 lower links in a 4 link setup.?
Thanks for any info or pics too help me out.
adam :beerchug:

Sorry no pics but I know a couple of people that have done buggy leafs and they have also put in a track bar to reduce the axle wrap issue. Buggies will give you a lot of drop so you may also need a longer splined driveline. One rig I know of has a pin and a keeper to keep the buggies up against the frame while on the street so it will handle better. It really depends on how you set it up and the type of spring you use for the buggy as to how it will perform. I personally think they are unnecessary :twocents:

Yup thats right Blucruz.  Buggy leafs are in all reality for ramp #'s, they do help out a little bit offroad but I dont think all the work and compromises are worth it in the end.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Thumper, I did longer springs and buggy's similar to Stone's, I bolted it thru the frame and then used a small ubolt for side to side control, I'll try to get a pic on here tomorrow of it.
As far as performance I have'nt experinced any bad axle wrap or breakage but at the same time I really did'nt gain all that much flex either.

Just my  :twocents:

Hey guys thanks for all the pics and info so far im still haveing trouble decideing on what i should do yet or not.
A friend of myne wants too do a tractor style rear where we would use a big peace of tubing that can pivit like a tractor does up and down in the front and have my shackles on it and have it where i can put in 2 pins in the center and it will be rigid like it is now, i dont know if this idea will work or not does anyone understand what im talking about or did i not explane it very good.

Also has anyone ever used the pivoting shackles  i saw a set on ebay once but never knew of anyone using them.

Thanks for the help guys keep the info comeing.

Are you talking about Revolver shackles.  If so there is a thread here somewhere all about them.  My dad runs them and he really like the way the perform.

I am not runnign the buggy springs but my friend is.  They flex great and he doesn't get that bad of axle wrap even with a lead foot.  He used the main front leaf off a stock toyota pack.  Bolted it with 3 U-bolts and a center pin through the frame per side.

Yup yup, similar to what I did. Fuk it, go ahead and run it, if you dont like it just bolt it up.

Hey stone i noticed you dident cut off ur orig shackle mounts off the frame did that make it flex any worse or did it tump against it alot or did it even effect it any in your opinion?
thanks for the help guys i think im gonna try out the buggy deal like in the pic and use u bolts too hold the leaf in place and leave my orig spring hanger there and if i like it cut it off later.
Should i put a wrap bar and run it from the top of my axel too my crossmember above the drive shaft or should i use too lower links and run them too the frame off the bottom of the axel, kinda of like a 4 link but only use the 2 lower links i think that might stop axel wrap but if i go that far might as well use 2 more and go coils.
what do you think?
thanks
