I'm shure the head shake must be becouse of the J e e p  thing right? The 4.0 is a great motor but it is a bit heavy for a toyota. Did jeep even offer a transfer case with a pass side drop? You arent gonna swap in those dana axles are you?
You might check around for a stand alone harness for a 4.0. I'm shure someone offers a harness for useing this motor in a buggy, or some other vehicle.

I have seen pictures of a 4.0 swap into a 2nd gen Hilux, and you need to go measure how long that thing is. If the 4.0 is the inline 6 that I saw in the pictures, then it was so long that the guy had to remove the firewall of the Hilux and he never finished the project. I think he also cut out part of his radiator support and mounted the radiator in the bed or something crazy like that.......... :headscratch:

Since you've got access to the engine, could you please measure from the front of the engine fan to the very rear of the cylinder head? Then compare that with a 22R.

Also, you are in even a worse situation than what I saw in the aforementioned pictures, since a 1st gen Hilux's engine bay is apprx. 1-3/4" shorter than a 2nd gen engine bay.

As for pound-per-power and/or displacement-per-power, I don't know how good the 4.0 is, but I've driven a couple of them and those motors kick butt on the streets :yesnod: when size/weight/efficiency is not an issue :burnout:

Good luck

Here is a buildup thread for you http://www.rockfrogs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=156&start=0

He's a good friend of mine.  It's basically a Toyota frame and cab with a XJ front clip, 4.0 I-6, and Dana 44's front and rear.  It's got a flatbed so most of the weight is in the front.  That thing climbed everything in Moab!  It was amazing!
