Coil spring suspension ????
« on: Mar 14, 2004, 09:16:26 PM »
Ok im putting a 4runner rearend out of a 95 and up toyota 4runner under the back of my 82 and i am wondering about doing the 4link suspension, is there any good sites out there that gives the math problems or any way too figure out how long i should make the links.
Ive been reading in the peterson's 4wheel and offroad mag and they showed some stuff how too do it but dident go into real depth on it and kinda confused me. :help:
Any help you can give me pics or sites that have done this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You need to look up some books. Chassis Engineering by Herb Adams, Fundamentals of Vehicle Dynameics by Thomas D Gillespie, and Race Car Dynamics by Milliken and Milliken. Here you will get more info and opinions than u will know what to do with. And these books are mainly street use but have good info. To find out what you length of your links will need to be you will need one of these books, a calculator and a piece of paper. Good luck

Hey im in the process of reading the link Krawler posted i just wish the pics still worked, and what springs would everyone suggest you said areostar coils, is that the company?
Does anyone have any pics on there buildup they did.
This weekend im going too go see the guys at wagoneer machine and take abunch of pics of there rigs and get some help from them.
i have a short wheelbase frame laying in the back yard im thinking about using it too mock up all my links and tack weld every thing under it and make shure its gonna work good before i tear appart my 82 so i dont have much down time but my wheeler is a 82 long wheelbase frame do you think it will hurt too do the mockup on the shorter frame sence im gonna be using the same stuff on the long frame just in a lil diff location prob.
Does that make sence?
Also should i just go ahead and do the front at the same time as the rear or leave it leaf springed for now its got rear springs up front, and flexes pretty good right now i can flex the front left about 3 ft off the ground before the back starts comeing off the ground but with coils in the rear that would help alot.
Pics needed.
Thanks guys

Here's the setup I did on my Taco: http://www.krawlr.com/TacoTech/axles&suspension/Rear/rear.html
The things I got most from that thread: Longer is better.  From a side view, drawing imaginary lines extending your links to the point that they intersect, they should cross just above the vehicle center of gravity.

How do I find the center of gravity you ask? I used the scientific "best guess" method and figured it's between the seats behind the shifter on my rig.

Also I used black pipe for my mockup work when I could. Don't want to cut that DOM untill you're 100% sure. :)

hey guys thanks for all the help and thanks for the site and info krawler ur helpin me out alot.
so what do you think of the coils you used do they flex good enough ill post some pics of what im going too use tomarrow if i can get time im thinking about using stock rear 4runner coils becuase i have alot of them left from a dealership here that we got back on recalls, so if i bend one or stretch one i can just grab another from the pile.
do you have any more pics of the adjustable ride height set up you did thats pretty cool and does it mess up the angle of the 4 link when you adjust it.
thanks again

That's my second set of coils. Started with stock TJ front coils but with all the gear I carry I switched to 2" lifted TJ coils from BDS. I cut one coil wrap off of those to get the height I wanted. Definately grab whatever freebie coils you can get your hands on and experiment. The Areostar coils are long and soft, I carry too much gear to use them myself but they would work good on something lighter.

I originally designed the top mounts to be adjustable but now I just let them slide. They are made from 2" trailer receiver parts. You can see how they slide out here:

The front is on airbags. I used a full size Bronco axle with the Duff radius arms made for the Bronco. Got some info here: http://www.krawlr.com/TacoTech/axles&suspension/Front/frontaxle.html

Nice rig! looks fun to wheel, but whats up with the "Mad Max" looking grill?

I've helped reopen logging roads for trailriding here in the midwest. The sapling trees that take over the road like to poke holes in your radiator. The grill keeps them from getting that far before they get snapped. Saves lots of footwork with a chainsaw.

For the enviromentalists: These are roads found on current mapping software 2004 version, on private property, with permission directly from the owner(s) in person. :shake: ::) :shake:
