Well, bending basically goes up exponentially as you increase the length of the span, so it really depends on how much of a safety margin was originally calculated into the housing. As people have bent stock housings, I’d err on the side of caution and reinforce the axle.

+3" each side.

Wouldn't think that would make that much of a difference but here is the added separation between knuckle and perch that creates my concern:

A bit of an update, it's taking longer than expected but i'm cutting less corners than I have in the past on my own stuff and i'm liking the results.

Finished the shave and truss on the front end.

the best shot i have of the truss for now, if I find that lower leading edge to cause problems I will cut and weld a better lead-in. (I may do this anyway before it's on the road depending on motivation)

the beginning stages of the core support

then flanged, gusseted, and shock tabs added

passenger inner fender starting to come together, making them bolt-on/removable

and how it's currently sitting, awaiting work on the drivers side fender well

also picked up some steel wheels and total metal innovations rock rings

as well as a '99 4runner rear axle to match my front, will use my current locked/geared third while i learn to rebuild and set up the v6 3rd one of these days

will end up setting up for leaves and trussing/armoring similar to the front

and for fun just sharing a little of what I do at work (I'm a mechanical designer at a packaging company)

That's all for now, cheers  :beerchug:

That's a gnarly truss on that front axle, I feel sorry for any rocks in it's way.  Great to see your build coming back together.

Digging the FJ60 grill...as opposed to the previous FJC look.

yeah it ended up a bit of a dual purpose truss as far as strengthening/supporting housing as well as protection

Thanks Donal, I'm liking it a lot more. The only thing I need to figure out is what to do between the truck fender marker lights and the 60 grill, not sure if I want to cut up fj60 headlight buckets or just fabricate some filler panels. I never got that far on the last grill and I hated the un-finished look

Going to upload some update pics soon but have a question for any of you guys who have worked with canvas. I'm working on some half doors all around and want to put some covers on for winter. What was your experience sewing them? How was it sewing in the window material? Trying to decide if I should just go solid with lexan or similar material and sacrifice the easy open access. Thanks

Some older updates, will get to newer ones soon hopefully

Rear axle trussed next to old, top 99 4ruuner, bottom 84 mini

old defroster ducting was falling apart, gave making a new one a shot

main tube has 2 baffles along the length to help even out the air flow

then the vents, precision tube smashing

CAD model of what becomes a bumper, more to come on that later

tape line for a half door window panel, more on that later as well

a little unrelated art for the wife

Thanks guys, here's some more stuff...

front bumper, the "wings" bolt on to the main center tray

the start of the rear gate, spindle from 4x4labs

made a toggle latch

half doors

also picked up a medium sized beadroller from eastwood and beefed it up, will end up using it to redo the dash that's been torn out as well as some other cover and kick panels on the inside and engine bay, cause that's what the cool kids are doing these days  :beerchug:

all that will be after I make the filler lexan panels for the half doors
