Rear Spool and street use
« on: Jan 27, 2007, 09:24:35 AM »
I have an '82 and I am looking to put a spool in the rear.  Don't wat to weld it right now.  I will have to drive on the street everynow and then.  I know tire life will be shorter.   Will I risk breaking anything?  The truck will see mostly dirt roads and offroad, but I may need to drive it in the city while making repairs on my DD

Thanks ahead of time

A spool works the same as welding. :headscratch:

The reason for not welding is
1. Lack of welder
2. Would prefer to be able to remove the spiders and keep them if I ever wish to resuse them.

So in everyones opinion, some street use will not be a huge issue if I drive conservatively?

I run a spool on my runner, with 37s, and i used it as a dd for a long time, gets used to people staring -but otherwise its fine, i didnt even notice accelerated tire wear

I welded the rear on my '83 cause I'm broke. DD and no problems. I have not noticed any increased tire wear nor have I had any parts break. If you drive on snow or ice be prepared for a little bit of learning. If you do weld, be sure to do it via the 3/8" plate method. shown half way down http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=480492

throw in a mini-spool, you dont have to reset your gears. just like installing a lunchbox locker sept you dont have the option of it unlocking

what size tires are you running and what air pressure do you run them at. in my experiance the smaller the tire the more it chirps when you turn as goes for the more pressure you run. but no problems as far as breakage. but the only dislike is reversing in a parking lot it wont turn as good as it used to.

Thanks All!!

Have a Marlin Spool set up with Yukon 4.56 gears.  Will be running either 35 BFG Muds or 35 Cooper STT Muds.  Somewhat diminished steering, or at least it seems harder to turn since I don't have power steering yet.  Have a TrueTrac up front with stock inners.

Just don't turn. :gap: Seriously, I have run a spool/welded diff with no issues at all. In fact I had more issues with my Detroit unloading on me driving down the freeway, scares the crap out of you then you realize it was just the Detroit unloading. Yes the outside tire will scuff in a turn but it's not biggie and if you don't accelerate around corners you will notice very little extra tire wear.
