Getting New Tires
« on: Jan 04, 2007, 12:05:50 PM »
Well I know I'm usually the one thats always got something to say about tire but this time I wanna hear what you guys think.  I'm going to be buying some big snow tires for my buggy and I thought you guys might like to put some input in. I've pretty much narrowed it down to the IROK's and am open to other suggestions.  I have 2 sets of wheels that I could use and I can't decide which ones I will use.  I currently have 15x10's aluminum beater wheels and my 17x9 TrailReady beadlocks.  I kinda want to use my beadlocks because of obvious reasons but wish they were wider.

The tires I'm thinking of right now are 42x14x17 bias ply and or the same tire on a 15 wheel
or 41x14.50x17 Radial

I've heard the bias work really good in the snow even though they are bias but I've really only ever been impressed with Radials in the snow.

I'm open to other suggestions of tires if you guys have any.  I don't want anything smaller than the 41.  I really do want something like a 44 or close to there, but then I run into width issues because of my wheels.

i vote for 42 inch irocs...or boggers that are cut

toyo mts would be sweet in a 42   ;) but i think the biggest they make is a 40x17x22 or something stupid like that

good luck, post pics!!! :beerchug:

yeah a 42 Toyo would be my first choice hands down but that 40x15.50x22 is $776 in the 4wP catalog.  There is now way in hell I'm paying that much for tires.

Don't worry though I'll post pics when I get them.

Hmmmm, you say you're okay with bias tires, you are interested in Iroks, you want something bigger than 41" I think there's one obvious solution. 49s.  I've got a couple of buddies with these and I'm thinking of seeing if I can borrow a set for a snow trip. I think they would be AWESOME in the snow. Wide, tall, and a sick tread pattern that many rave about in the snow.  :eyebrow:

well I know a guy around here with 49's and he's pretty much unstoppable.  You guys might know the rig.  He was in the 2000 TTC.  Its a massive F100 that was on 44's in the comp but now he's got it linked in the back and it has 49's.

There was a guy that has a SN-Fab buggy like mine that was running 49's and even though technically I could fit them I don't think its necessary for me.  They built my chassis to fit tires that big at full stuff and full lock but really my rig weighs under 3000lb loaded.  I think a 42 would work just fine.  I would like it better though if they offered a 44 in a IROK.  IMO the IROK really is the only BIAS that makes sense.  TSL are just to stiff.  I already sold a set of 38's that I hated.

Ohhhh, now you're changing the requirements to necessary and unnecessary.  ::)  :shake:    :talkingn: In all seriousness, I'd go with the 42s. 49s would be mainly for the cool factor but the 42s should be awesome.

yeah I agree in regards to the 49's.  Besides.  I can buy almost 2 42 Iroks for the price of the 49's

Any compromise in width is a compromise. Get the right size wheel for the tire you want to run. anything narrower than a 15 inch tire is a compromise. I was just on a trip with a guy that ran 40" Krawlers. I spanked them with my 38 radials, I did better than 39.5 TSL's too.

width is the key, flotation is the goal. you know that.

yeah I do know that.  And I am not even going to try and run my Krawlers in the snow.  I have heard very bad things about them in the snow.  Because of their poreiss rubber they just ice up and give no traction.  See right now my toyota had 37x14.50x15 toyos and I run them on 15x12 MT classic II's.  They flatten out really nice and I float extremely well.  I figure that with a 14" wide tire on a 9+" beadlocked rim I can get it flattened out really well.  My dream tire would be a 44x15x17 Toyo MT, or a 44x15.50x17 IROK.

why do you think that I have a 87 SR5 Runner as well on 37 toyos????

great minds think alike.  Also I'd love to have a fast car but.....I like to go fast to much and currently I have never had a speeding ticket and I want to keep it that way, it really helps on my insurance.

I have a friend running 44 tsl's on 9" double beadlocks. Not a good combo. the wheel is so narrow, the tire folds under on sidehills. He now has 46 Claws on 16" wide wheels. That is a good combo. I am running 15.5 on 10" wide and am going to go to 12"

The ratio of wheel to tire width is crucial to the tire performing. divide the wheel into the tire.
9" wheel / 14 tire = .642
10" wheel / 15.5 tire = .645
12" wheel / 15.5 tire = .774

By that anything in the range close to .75 should be good. I am planning on the 49's so I would need a 16" wide wheel minimum. Ratio from wheel diameter to tire size should play in too, but
I don't think it makes much difference unless you go way off 15-17. Like a  41X14.50R22 Irok

I was just talking about this to my friend the other night.  He does not like the 17" wheel sized that guys are now running.  I made this argument to him though.  A 17" wheel on a 42 has the same ratio of sidewall as a 15" on a 38.  After he saw that I agreed that if ai went with a minimum of a 42 I should have a nice amount of sidewall to flex out.

So you didn't answer my question earlier cruzila.  Any news on your "snowbuggy"

Did not see the Q sorry. Snowbuggy. I did run out to Rubicon in the cruiser yesterday. Got the bug. I was looking at the 42 Irok but did not like the 14 inch width.

I found a set of 49 Iroks. They should be here next week. Problem is they are 17 wheel. Can't complain over the price though. Beadlocks are going to be an issue. I can't see paying more for the wheel than the tire. Might have to play with fabbing something. I think I will see if I can get a 17 in a 14-16 width, no locks to start. I can always do weldon's on both sides.

Besides that, it is going to be slow on the build.

Like I said earlier I wouldn't mind the 49's but with the price and my little 4.3 Vortec I think that'd be a little bit much.  I'd probably just run in 4lo the whole time.  Just to have some power.  I know this goes back to our discussion about the engine size but I for what I have the 4.3 works awesome for me.  In all honesty if I was to do it over tomorrow and had an extra 6 grand laying around I'd go with an LS1 with a couple mods on it.  Maybe someday I'll part out my buggy and upgrade to a different chassi with an LS1 and mog axles or something cool like that.

The friend running the 46's has a 4.3. It has enough ponies to make it go. FWIW I'd go LS6 it would only be 10K ...........lol

IIRC the LS2 is the current "base model" motor and the LS6 is in the ZO6 package (sick car BTW)
